Gaku-do Hall (額堂) is a fascinating and unique structure within Naritasan Shinshoji Temple, showcasing a collection of votive tablets (ema) and plaques donated by worshippers over the centuries. These wooden plaques, inscribed with prayers and expressions of gratitude, create a visually striking display that reflects the deep spiritual devotion associated with the temple.

The hall’s architecture is simple yet elegant, with a traditional wooden design that harmonizes with the surrounding temple structures. Walking through Gaku-do, you can feel the history and faith embedded in the countless plaques, some of which date back to past eras. It’s a quieter spot within the temple complex, allowing for a moment of reflection and appreciation of the cultural traditions behind...

GAKU-DO Hall Important Cultural Property This is the structure where votive tablets (votive pictures of horses and the like) are displayed. In 1861 the hall was built as the second GAKU-DO hall in the precincts. The span between pillars is approximately 5.5 meters in the front and 11 meters at the back of the structure. The roof is tiled with IRIMOYA-pantiles. There used to be wooden siding walls on the back, but presently it has no wall on any side of the hall. The fact that a full-scale method of construction was employed even for this structure of minor importance, indicates the profundity of people's devotion to Buddhism in those days. Sculptures of dragons and lions observed in various parts of the hall are by Yujiro Goto. At the back of the Three-Storied pagoda, there used to be another GAKU-DO hall (the first GAKU-DO) donated by a noted Kabuki actor of the Naritaya family. It was destroyed by fire in 1965. The stone statue of the 7th Danjuro Ichikawa found in the middle of the hall was relocated from the first GAKU-DO hall. A large number of EMA or votive pictures of horses and the like which used to be displayed in the halls are now preserved in the Reiko-Kan as valuable...
