While walking along Naritasan Omotesando, Oomiya is a great place to have lunch.
This is a traditional-style restaurant. As we walked in, a friendly and energetic hostess will welcome you. She will ask you to remove your shoes and will give you plastic bags to carry them in as you walk on the tatami floor.
Menus are also in English, so tourists like us won’t have a hard time. The service is friendly and patient. As you can see from my pictures, we ordered:
yakitori, grilled chicken served with togarashi: a piquant, complex spice-blend
una-jyu, eel over rice, the area’s signature dish
zaru-soba, cold soba noodles with a dipping broth
tempura soba, hot soba noodles in broth with shrimp tempura
ten-don, shrimp and vegetable tempura with rice
a small draft beer
All were beautifully presented and delicious. There were no complaints from anybody. My dish, the zarusoba, served with tsuyu (dipping broth), green onions and wasabi was refreshing and filling.

Read moreBefore we departed from Narita Airport, we decided to drop by Naritasan to eat some famous Unagi. Other Unagi restaurants had long lines or even gave Seiri-ken(numbered tickets) at the front doors and we were not sure when we could eat. However this restaurant was different. While waiting, we enjoyed watching the master cooking Unagi and smell the charcoal and the sauce, but it was just 10-15 minutes and our table was ready. The ell came quickly after we ordered. The balance of Unagi and the amount of rice were good. The Tare (Unagi sauce) was exactly what we expected and was a great topper to an already good eel. The atmosphere was also really nice and enjoyable sitting at a traditional Japanese table in an old style house gave the sense of really being in Japan over other restaurants in Tokyo. I would highly recommend coming here to try this dish...
