菖蒲池は、鏡池の東側に在り、池の周りには菖蒲とキショウブ(外来種)が生息しています。 伝説によると、菖蒲池の近くに住んでいた若夫婦の夫が肺病になってしまいました。 妻は、懸命に看病しますが病は重くなるばかりでした。 妻は、池の水で身を清め一心不乱に神仏に、祈願しました。 祈りを続けて37日目に『池の菖蒲を採り、夫の身に巻けば、病は必ず退散する』というお告げを受けお告げの通りにすると、夫の病は全快したと伝わっています。 菖蒲池の石碑には、【菖蒲池】【八番霊場】【優鉢羅竜王(ウハラカりゅうおう)】【和歌】が刻まれています。 【和歌】 『あやめ草　なにおふ池は　くもりなき　さつきの鏡　みるここちせり』 ≪和歌訳≫ 『あやめ草の池と、その花の名を冠して呼ばれる池は、一面に咲き誇る様子を誇り、鏡に映るかの様に水面に映る五月の青空を見る人の心に感じさせる』 ≪チョット豆知識≫ 石碑に刻まれている【優鉢羅】とは、サンスクリット語で『青蓮華』と云われ、青い蓮華の花が咲く池に棲む事から、別名『青蓮華竜王』とも云われ、青蓮華池に棲み、人々に安らぎを与える竜王(神様)と云われています。 仏典では、優鉢羅華と呼ばれ、清浄なるものの例えと云われています。
