After having underwhelming experiences at sparkling chain gyms with people in bright yellow shirts running around like police telling you that you can't sit on the bench to rest before your next set, this was a breath of fresh air.

I was looking for more of a community gym that might not typically attract gringos or new years resolution types. A no-fuss gym for the more serious athlete, who lives in the surrounding community. And finally, on my last day, I stumbled upon this gym while shopping at Mercado San Juan.

The gym is upstairs behind an iron door that with a handwritten sign saying "Gym". Up 2 flights of stairs I met a young guy who, when he wasn't at the front desk, seemed to be cleaning constantly. The day pass is 50 pesos (in contrast, the aforementioned chain gym with the yellow-shirt bees that buzz around you and tell you that you can't rest, or you can't have that particular thing in this particular area, cost 3x as much)

Mostly young serious guys at this gym, it seemed to be leg day today (for me as well). Everyone was friendly and considerate. While not a new gym, the equipment all worked well and everything was clean. Not only that, but if you need a rest between sets, grab a book that's in easy distance from whatever machine you're sitting on between your sets. No buzzing yellow bees to harass you here. Maybe if you want to use a machine someone's sitting on reading that book, maybe you can actually talk to them and work in. Who knows, maybe you'll make a new friend.

Alright, here's the lowdown on this place. This is what you would call a "gym de barrio" – affordable and no frills, you know what I mean? It's got that vintage vibe, with some slightly ancient but seriously sturdy equipment. If you're all about getting ripped, this is your spot. No flashy branding, no surprise fees, and no need for plastic.

Now, if you live nearby, it's a no-brainer. I'd steer clear of their showers, but it's cool because you can just saunter home to freshen up.

I'm visiting Mexico City for a couple of weeks and staying at the historic center. I've been to a few gyms in the neighborhood, and this one is my favorite. It's a great gym not to mention that it's also only 50 pesos per visit! There's another 50 peso gym called Extasis Gym but that one is really small with minimal barely functional equipments.
