Seemingly relaxing public square allowing for a calming break after touring the busy arts and crafts market across the street. However, the place is steeped in history, mostly tragic. The park is alternatively known as Jardin (Garden) Morelos, named so after the monument to honor José María Morelos y Pavón (1765-1815), a Catholic priest and one of the early leaders of the Mexican struggle for independence, executed by the Spanish authorities. Almost one hundred years later, the place has seen a horrifying death of Gustavo Moreno, a brother of President Francisco I. Madero (1873-1913), who incidentally inaugurated the said monument 11 months before. During the "Ten Tragic Days" in February 1913, after a military coup, the Presidential Palace was bombarded from the Arsenal (Ciudadela), the red long building on the other side of the square. La explanada de baile, en contra esquina del mercado de Artesanías, es de los lugares más icónicos de la Ciudad de México. Se trata de una explanada construida con un escenario, cubierta con una gran lona para los encuentros de baile que se llevan a cabo, principalmente los días domingo. Pocas ocasiones ví una banda sonar ahí, sin embargo hay sonido local para realizar el baile. No te arrepentirás si un día decides visitar esta esquina, no hay costo, es una actividad al aire libre, algunas personas que bailan danzón, lucen con la indumentaria de ese entonces, hay quien da clases, notarás que muchas personas son principiantes así como esas personas mayores donde se nota la experiencia, los géneros de música, no solo se encasillan al danzón, puedes bailar cumbia, salsa, son, etc. El único punto malo, es que en ocasiones hace falta seguridad, merodean personas en situación de calle.
