Sunny’S Kitchen — Local services in Kaikōura

I honestly just discovered the best fish and chips in New Zealand tonight. Driving through Kaikoura with the munchies and spotted Sunny's Kitchen. What a find. I've eaten a lot of this in my lifetime, but man this was epic. Special recipe batter with the perfect blend of herbs and spices, unreal. Tried Elephant fish, never had it before, absolutely divine.

Service second to none. Freshly battered and cooked right in front of you and Sunny is a hell of a good bloke to have a chat with.

After it was ready, and placed in a sturdy cardboard box, he asked me to break off a piece and make sure it was properly cooked. This is something I haven't experienced before and just showed his dedication to perfection for the customer. Most takeaways shove a soggy parcel at you and see ya later. Of course it was golden, crispy and meaty inside. Just as you want it. Chips seasoned perfectly and just the right amount.

You have to stop in and support this guy, he's bloody outstanding. I will be back. Cheers for the cracker feed and the yarn...

Sorry to say I was a little disappointed. Sunny's kitchen offers amazing service. Such a nice guy. But I got to be honest about the food, which on this occasion was just OK. The batter was a bit think and not as crispy as I would like. (Not too greasy though - I'll give him that). The Blue cod was beautiful and the chips were ok, just a bit on the stringy side for a large portion. A wedge of lemon or coleslaw or some sauce would have been nice also... I tried another fish and chip shop in the area the next day just to compare, and it confirmed it for me. So in conclusion: Service: 5 stars - a great guy eager to please and improve. But atmosphere (it's a van in an uninspiring carpark) and food on this occasion was just...

We were late sorting dinner for the 8 of us last night and realised the later it got our choices were more limited. We found Sunny’s Kitchen on google and headed out in the wind & sleet. We were met with a friendly enthusiastic Sunny very happy to take our complicated and ever changing order despite the fact he was nearly closing. We watched Sunny take pride in preparing our food and cooking it all freshly made to order. We said our goodbyes and were blown away by the quality when we got home to all tuck in. The boys all commented on how tasty the burgers were. The chips were great and the blue cod was super succulent....
