Black Rabbit Pizza — Restaurant in Kaikōura

We had a terrible experience here which surprised us because we specifically went for lunch at this place due to the reviews. First we couldn’t find staff when we walked in so had to wait to find out if we could choose our own seats etc. It wasn’t busy so that’s understandable but not ideal. Then the bathroom was absolutely gross, there had been a poop situation and there was a very messy bowl and seat. Maybe the staff hadn’t been to the bathroom, so I just left without using the facilities. Again, can be forgiven. The restaurant was cold and we were both sorry that we hadn’t brought in our jackets to wear. The glasses and silverware on the table were not very clean which for me is a bit off putting. We just didn’t use them and decided to order pizza as the pizza was well reviewed on here. We ordered according to the menu and when my chicken pizza came out it had bacon on it. This was not mentioned on the menu and I do not eat pork so I took it up to the counter and had to wait for staff to come and speak to me again. At this point I was over it to be fair. I at first asked to just refund the pizza and wanted to leave but the staff said that they would cook me up a new one quickly and I didn’t want to be a jerk so I accepted. When the pizza came out it was very fast and I was suspicious that they had just taken off the bacon and reheated it. The staff member picked up on it and brought out the first pizza to show me that it had been wrapped in plastic wrap and labelled to be FROZEN AND SERVED AGAIN!!!! That was it for me. I took one bite of the second pizza so that they couldn’t serve it again and we left. You cannot serve food to a table, have people touch it and walk around with it, freeze it and cook it again to give to a different customer. I worked in hospo for over ten years. Both of my brothers are chefs. It should never happen. You need to be very clear when you have pork in a dish and once that food has been handled and returned that’s trash. Pizza : great Pastries: wide variety, average Coffee: ordered twice but wasnt impressed, one really bad experience. Customer experience: not good, they are quite disorganized

Have been there about 3-5 times. So far their pizza is great, and never disappoint. Will be there for the pizza. But in terms of service/ management, there's a lot to improve on.

I like the wide variety of pastries they offer draws me back.

However, i find that they are quite disorganized. Whenever i'm there, the staff messed up order or aren't well informed about their menu. Can understand that there are new staff, but that didnt just occur once or twice. Here's to elaborate 2 of my bad experience when ordering food: Once i ordered a mocha, apparently they have a new counter staff who couldnt answer a question to the customer, the barista was distracted while steaming the milk, and busy helping to answer to the customer question while making my mocha. In the end my mocha tasted bad and also it was burning hot i burnt my tongue. Took a long while for the coffee to cool.

When ordering the pastries (muffins and donuts) there is no label on them, to know what they are. Also there's no pricing shown which is frustrating. I have to ask the staff about what the flavours of those muffin are and apparently he doesnt know either.. he had to look at a price list next to the pastries and also guessing or assuming he know which pastry they actually are and not tell me the price of something else.. i knew he wasnt sure about it as during previous visit the price was $5 and 2nd visit he told me it's $6 only to realise later he referred to the wrong item, when i double checked with him.

I am satisfied with the food, but i really hope they improve on the staff knowledge of...

After a long last 12 months, working over Christmas/new year, I decided to get away for a night, to just get out of town..relax and breathe. Part of my plan included having breakfast here, as I have been here before, a few years ago now (probably when old owners had it), I was really looking forward to breakfast, reminiscing, enjoying the great food... sadly, this wasn't the case. I left feeling terribly disappointed. The best part....the floor was spotless! I ordered pancakes (it's what I ordered here before), it came with banana, berries and maple syrup, (last time it came with bacon too), you have to order and pay for tea or coffee separately, even though the menu says tea/coffee included... I choose a table, worst luck, someone's jam is still on the table, I move a seat over, finally breakfast arrives (people who ordered after me got their breakfast first), my pancakes are cold, they've gone rubbery, oh well, also they added whipped cream from the can, all over my plate, this was not on the menu, I'm lactose intolerant, had I known they do this, I'd have asked for no cream, so there goes half my berries, and maple syrup, the small bit of maple syrup on the plate was under the cream...so now I have dry, cold, rubbery pancakes it is. I'm wondering where my coffee is, the waitress is on her phone outside, she's been there almost the whole time I've been here, I go to ask for my coffee to go as I'm finished my breakfast now, she comes in and proceeds to make me my coffee...not to go.
