Wok Thai Takeaway — Local services in Nelson

While passing through Stoke a couple of weeks ago we noticed that this new food outlet had popped up, seemingly out of nowhere! My wife and I both love Thai food, or any food from the Asian continent, so it was quickly added to our list. Well what a nice surprise! As is often the case, this was a takeaway only place, with no seated dining, so I phoned and placed my order. I was proudly informed that the food would be ready in 5 minutes! Astoundingly quick! This did make me wonder about the cooking and flavour - well I shouldn't have worried at all as the food was VERY good. We ordered the Pad Thai as this is a staple dish and we would be able to compare it to our other experiences. This was very nice - with the noodles having a nice texture and the flavour profile being strong and confident. The vegetables were fresh and cooked lightly, tasty and crisp. A well rounded dish. We also ordered the Tom Yum fried rice with Seafood. This was great, with a nice light flavour. Again the veges were fresh and crisp. The seafood mix consisted of Mussels, Prawns and Calamari. These were all cooked well, not overcooked they were nice and tender. The kitchen was nice a clean, and the counter was low and you can watch the lovely lady cooking the amazing food before your eyes, this enforces the confidence in this kitchen. We have a good number of Thai food options in our little town, and that decision has just been made a LOT harder. Well...

Staff in the cashier was very friendly. They have a couple of dine-in tables inside the shop and I decided to dine in rather than takeaway. I had a Tom Yum stir fried with rice and it was surprisingly salty. So I asked for a glass of water and the Thai chef said “this is a takeaway shop, we don’t serve water. But we can do special for you but normally you have to buy.” I know their shop name has Takeaway but obviously they’ve got dine-in tables/chairs and even the plates and cutleries prepared for dine-in customers. I was shocked by the chef’s comment since even KFC gives you a glass of water if you ask for it. Probably their takeaway service still should be ok as they are quick and you don’t need to ask for water but my dine-in experience with them wasn’t very nice. Since the taste of the dish I had was too salty and the overall experience wasn’t great, I wouldn’t try other dishes in this...

This was possible the worst green curry I have ever had. I am a big fan of Thai food and cook and eat it a lot. I had a view of the kitchen so was anticipating enjoying watching my food be prepared. First she put veges in a basket and into some hot liquid to blanch. That’s probably ok. Then she tipped it direct into the takeaway container, she then went into the back room and seconds later I heard the beep of a microwave. Pre-made green curry must have been added in the back room - a minute later the microwave stopped and it was done. When I ate it it didn’t really taste of anything. Absolutely terrible.
