We had the pleasure of fishing the South Island from Twizel on January 25, and the North Island from Taupo on January 30. Each island offered a unique experience: outside of Twizel, during the morning we fished some slow-moving water at a stream mouth as it flowed into a lake, then proceeded to follow this stream as it wound upward. We were struck by the clarity of the water as we saw massive, girthy brown trout rising or feeding just below the surface. The dry-dropper rig was key, with a long leader and at least two feet of tippet (3X or 4X) between the dry and dropper. Stealth was crucial, and we lost some fish due to lack thereof. With a precise cast, there was a high chance that a trout would key in on either fly. Brad, our Twizel guide, is an experienced hunter of brown trout, and that first morning under his tutelage, my dad and I each landed a brown heavier than 7 pounds (first and second pictures attached). For the afternoon, we fished some flats of stillwater, targeting big browns cruising parallel to the shoreline. We also traced a couple channels upstream from their emptying point in this basin. For subsequent days on our own, we had the chance to successfully fish a lake with significant populations of big fish, as well as the legendary Ahuriri River.
On the north island, from Taupo we drove a fair distance with our guide, Dustin, to a trail that wound its way up a backcountry stream. The reward was well worth it, as we had the privilege of fishing seldom touched pools for athletic rainbow trout. Dustin was an expert teacher, showing us some new casting techniques and approaches that enhanced our skillset. We used both nymph rigs and dry-dropper rigs, with both being equally successful. Leader length was slightly shorter on this island; the water here was slightly less clear than the water on the South Island, perhaps making the fish slightly less wary. The highlight of that day for me was a ~6.5 pound rainbow trout nymphed from a peaceful pool (see third picture). On our own, the next day we fished the renowned Tongariro River with some success, especially with spectacular dry fly eats.
Overall, both guides were knowledgeable and personable. Both days were technical in their own way, offering unique opportunities to build angler aptitude and land trophy fish. The South Island presented an “alpine” vibe, while the North Island had more “jungle” aspects. You cannot go wrong with either fishery, and I hope to visit both in the years ahead. Special thanks to The New Zealand Fly Fishing Company for setting up...
Read moreAs a complete beginner I've always been fascinated by the movement of the rod and line in fly fishing. Recently, I had an opportunity to try it when my husband and I returned to NZ for a holiday, but had no idea how to go about learning the basics. A Google search revealed the New Zealand flyfishing company and very quickly I was in contact with Roy who asked a few questions and kindly scheduled a full day with a guide at very short notice. On the big day our guide, Gareth, showed up promptly at our motel and took us to get our waders and other gear. He asked a few questions about our fishing experience and what we'd like to achieve and listened attentively. It took less than 45 mins to arrive at our first fishing spot and to begin casting. Gareth was really very patient and helpful as we fumbled our way through learning the basics. He watched carefully, gave precise and easy to understand guidance and showed us what we were doing wrong and how to correct it. Throughout the day his attention was fixed entirely on us, our enjoyment and welfare and giving us the best possible experience. By the end of the day we'd fished two locations and caught three big rainbow trout each (not including the ones that got away). It was an amazing, memorable and educational experience. The highlight wasn't just catching the fish - although that was incredible - but the beautiful, isolated (but easily accessible) locations we visited and being guided by someone so patient, professional and knowledgeable. By the end of the day we were casting confidently and competently having made more progress than I had thought possible in such short time. More importantly, we'd had a fantastic experience that most people never get to enjoy. The day was exactly what we'd hoped for and so much more. Thank you so much from...
Read moreI CANNOT believe how amazing this company is!!! I was lucky enough to fish two full days with this company, and I couldn't write a less glowing review even if I tried! First off, Roy is a joy to be in contact with. You can tell he knows what he is doing, that he has a deep passion for fly fishing, and ensures his clients and guides get the best care possible. Roy goes above and beyond for his clients, making sure you get the best experience possible! I feel like I have grown a better understanding and respect for the sport, and have been given outlets to further my success and experience! On the first day, I learned heaps about fly fishing with Ciaran in Taupo. He took great care of me, teaching me all about mending, casting, and flies and we got a few fish on - but no catches! He did everything in his power to land me a fish, but with no avail (which was quite alright because I learned a TON). That day was extremely helpful in motivating me to keep trying, as prior to that day I had to try and teach myself all of this! Then on a whim I decided to fish with Brad in Twizel - BAM! 3 massive trout! One beautiful rainbow I caught all by myself!!! Brad was also very attentive and taught me a lot about the intricacies of fly fishing! Overall, I couldn't have been happier with this experience! Roy, Ciaran, and Brad have made a Colorado girl's dreams come true right in the nick of time! I would rate them 10 stars if I could (I am not kidding, they are that good!!)! But if this review doesn't sway you, check out their socials and send them a quick email - trust me you will be met with friendly professionals waiting to help bring you into...
