I was shopping for a necklace for my wife and wanted to find something distinctly Salamancan. I was looking for a botón charro, and visited a number of jewelry shops all over town. The most impressive and elegant one I found was in AgAu. It very much had the botón charro look, but its handcrafted and original design set it apart. After I had purchased it, I ended up chatting with the proprietors (who are also the designers and craftsmen of the jewelry) for some time. In addition to being talented artists and some of the kindest people you could hope to meet, they are also deeply interested in history and culture. As a teacher of history and a lifelong student, the owner has also worked as a tour guide all over Spain. He has an intimate knowledge of its places and its people, its history and its art. His appreciation and inspiration drawn from this knowledge and experience is incorporated into his designs of his jewelry. I learned a great deal about the history of Salamanca and the university from conversation with him. I ended up bringing my wife back to the store, as she had loved the necklace and I wanted her to see some of his work for herself. We ended up purchasing another necklace whose design was inspired by a pattern that is found on the walls of the Alhambra and a ceiling within the Universidad de Salamanca. It was great fun to search out the design among the patterns on the walls of the Nazari Palace in the Alhambra when we visited it afterward. Later on, I would often stop by the store just to chat. In all the time I spent at the store, I never saw them try to "sell" a customer on anything or make a sales pitch. There was no salesmanship, just welcoming hospitality and a willingness to help the customer find something they liked. These pieces are now found mementos of our time in Salamanca and Spain, as are the memories of conversations with the two gentleman of AgAu on Calle Libreros. It is a special place. I...
