The most powerful waterfalls in terms of flow rate in Europe (Mind: Not tallest) are located on the High Rhine on the border between the municipalities of Neuhausen am Rheinfall (SH) and Laufen-Uhwiesen/Dachsen (ZH). The suggestion is to visit them during summertime when the flow rate is almost 3 times the winter one, reaching 600 m3/s (21,000 cu ft/s). I reached them from ZĂŒrich HB by taking a train to Schaffhausen and then enjoying a 3,8 km (45-50 min) stroll along the Rhine river ZĂŒrich southern bank. Iâd suggest if coming from Schaffhausen to rent a bike âcause the southern bank walk involves steep climbs in the forest or, if interested to get fast to the Falls, to get a S12/S33 train from ZĂŒrich HB that that stops at the âSchloss Laufen am Rheinfallâ station which is directly at the falls, below the Swiss heritage Laufen Castle whose original structure dates back to 858 AD and was the seat of the barons of Laufen. Obviously the 40 min car drive from central ZĂŒrich is the fastest way to get there (parking 5 CHF first hour, 2 CHF for every additional one). The castle hosts a restaurant and a youth hostel but it is mainly crossed to get to the real attraction of the area: the 140m descent path (5 CHF adults; 3 CHF children 6-15yo) to reach the several viewing platforms that brings you at few meters distance from the boosting falls, a very unique and enchanting experience. This trail ends at the docks (served by a lift for direct access) where boats are sailing for several types of cruises from a simple Rhine crossing to get to the northern platforms bank (Castle Wörth)(3 CHF one way; 5 CHF return) to a 75 min cruise towards the German border. Tip: There is also a nearby rail bridge that has a pedestrian path, crossing the Rhine and giving a nice âend of the river-start of the...
Read moreExcellent waterfalls and tourist spot along the Rhine River in Switzerland. This is a wonderful stop on the way to Italy from Germany or vice versa.
We park on the Laufen side to walk up and down the stairs to see the different levels. On your return, you will take the elevator up to the top. It is all glass so you can experience the views as well. Rhein Falls is always busy, I have been many times and is a favorite with bus tours as well. If you are traveling on your own, arrive earlier in the morning when they open, you will find parking easier as well.
Tickets are âŹ11 or 11 Swiss Francs they accept either. Parking was payable by credit card.
Definitely grab your camera, the last two times I visited I was able to catch rainbows off the falls, it is magical. You can also take a boat ride around the falls, it is fast moving and fun. It also travels to the other side of the river.
As you walk down the stairs, there are placards that describe the beginning of the falls as an easy stream to the huge falls it is today. Take a minute to read through the history.
There is a restaurant with great views located on the property too. There are often special events that take place during the summer (so there is limited hours and menu) Also a gift shop with usual Swiss souvenirs. Swiss Army knifes, cowbells, sheep, etc. cute shop. It accepts Francs, Euros and Credit Cards.
This stop for me while traveling through takes about an hour to two hours...
