T-UP Climbing Gym (Wanhua) — Local services in Wanhua District

Pros: Clean, nice environment, good people and hard problems.

Cons: they haven't figured out the grading system yet. Lack a variety of climbing styles, most seem to be dynamic boulders. Much harder for longer people, expect a grade level harder if you're over 6 feet tall. Slab problems all seem to have large volumes at the base of the wall making any kind of awkward slip and fall a potential serious injury of an ankle, knee, elbow or face. Volumes from other oriblems are often in the way of the problem you're working on, just poor route setting in relation to other problems.

I have a lot of outdoor experience and have climbed many problems outdoors that are easier at the same grade than what is posted in the gym. Not a real concern, but just goes to show the lack of awareness into the difficulty of a problem.

Suggestion to owner: remove half of the large volumes at the base of climbs if you want to keep your clients safe, the same quality of climb can be achieved with smaller holds without the risk of injuring someone. Also, provide solutions to problems at the same grade level for people of all shapes and sizes. This will keep people from getting discouraged and make them want to come back more often, therefore earning more business...

Very large gym, I didn't even make it to the second floor. The routes are indicated via tape - one tape on the hold means both hands to the hold, two holds with the same coloured tape means that you have to start holding both those holds for your route. No feet tape indicators (I think?) so free for all there.

People are generally friendly, I saw some people giving tips here and there (and they're super polite about it here in Taiwan, they usually ask if you mind if they give you some suggestions).

For me the problems are a bit harder than in Singapore, but might be just what I'm used to (: they have plasters (at the front desk), washrooms, changing rooms, water dispensers, and cubbies for bags (lockers seem to be members-only). Quite a commercialised gym, front desk isn't really here to yap, but they're pretty nice, one of them thought I got lost finding L2 and came to ask if I managed to get...

Great gym. Conveniently located. Environment is well kept clean and well updated. They have new routes set every two weeks or so. And they really don’t cheap out on using big volumes and boxes. Nice space with many different areas including many slabs and an overhanging wall. They have recently expanded their area which now includes a higher wall, a moonboard, a second floor for teaching with a few problems set and a shower room and a third floor for kids, which is great if you want to take your kids, but also means there will be less small children running around while you’re trying your problems. Staff is always very friendly and I’ve even seen some give tours of the gym in English and in Japanese so I’m sure you’ll feel welcomed no matter where you come from which is always nice. Problems are very diverse and interesting. Prices are higher than other gyms in Taipei but I think they do a very good job managing the place so it’s so far my favorite...
