The Bear Club — Local services in England

We went to the Bear Club to see Dom Martin. Soon after the start I said to my husband “the bass is too strong”, it was at times drowning out the vocals and felt like a blow in the chest. After a few more songs I had vibrations in my torso and running down my arms to my fingers. I went to the sound man behind me and told him about it but he said he couldn’t do anything. Then a woman from the bar came over and said the musician had set up the bass, he wanted it that way. I couldn’t stay in the venue so had to leave. Having researched the phenomena I know now that I was having a vibroacoustic response to high intensity/low frequency amplitude, basically an element of the bass sound waves being strong enough to cause harm to the body, used by some musicians in some genres.Recipients of this attack vary in their awareness to it but the brain responds to the attack by sending endorphins to help the body cope, the audience feel good about the music and buy more alcohol, smoke more etc. What a low trick! And whether the Bear Club were ignorant of HI/LF sound waves or uncaring, I cannot trust them with my wellbeing and so will not return for any music. I would recommend the Stables near Woburn to anyone who doesn’t want to suffer HI/LF abuse as my experience is that the Stables’ sound quality...

The best new venue in Luton for years - this is the level of excellence that everyone else should aspire to. Live music, comedy, spoken word and film nights, all in a converted nineteenth century building about 3 minutes walk from Luton Railway Station and Bus Interchange, with the Bute Street Shoppers Car Park behind it free after 6pm if you come by car. Bottled beers, wine, cocktails and spirits on offer. There are bar snacks, but no other food - it ain't that kind of place. Plenty of tables, but you can stand if that's your preference. The friendly staff make for a friendly atmosphere, where you can meet people you know and get to know people you didn't before, and it really has attracted people from 18 to 80. You can turn up at the door for most ticketed events, but some will be advance only. Bear Club members like me get in for free for quite a few events and get discounts for most nights.
