I’ve used Queensgate for years and while there have been some setbacks in recent years with John Lewis leaving, it can still be an enjoyable experience and I am looking forward to Fraser’s opening.
My criticisms are more about Queensgate as an emerging leisure location in the evenings - despite Puttstars being here for a while and open much later than the rest of the shops, how you park and access it from the rest of town once the rest of the shops have shut hasn’t in my view been thought through very well.
We arrived and parked in the blue car park just before 7 - there was very little signage to say that was the only car park that would be open late, and we only knew from Puttstars own website that this was the case.
We wanted to meet for dinner first before going to Puttstars and would usually walk through Queensgate to get to Cathedral Square - just after the leisure area in Queensgate, a temporary security gate had been erected with several guards present, who told us the only way into town would be to go out through the Bus Station and around. We did this and then returned later through the bus station, but it was not as easy as walking through Queensgate as you would during the day.
It probably didn’t help that the Bus Station has not changed much since the whole centre opened in the 80’s! It was a depressing place to be in 2003, and 20 years later it remains the same - it just looks worn and tired, and if this is meant to be the main entrance to the leisure facilities from the rest of town, it doesn’t give a great impression!
It also didn’t help that both escalators were out of order to the bus station and have been for weeks seeing other reviews…
I really think Queensgate have missed an opportunity here - unless you know about the leisure offering and know you either need to enter from the car parks or the bus station, you are just going to think the whole place is closed passing any of the usual entrances near all of the pubs and restaurants where people out in an evening are going to be…
As for the bus station, a replacement is...
Read moreIt's difficult to explain queen's gate. As someone who grew up and spent most of their life in London, this would definitely not fly. It's awkward design means getting to either your car, the bus or a train is a trek. The decour is so old it's gone in and out of fashion probably several times.
When we first moved here it felt like it had presence, and like it had direction. Like it was aspiring to change. Somewhere along the way it hasn't so much lost it's way in my opinion, it's given up. There's just a lack of joined up thought in where things are and how they work.
Admittedly, they can't do much about access. It is what it is and I suppose it keeps us fit, but...
-we'll have a cinema and golf. Great! Exactly the sort of innovative thinking to keep things fresh. Where's the food outlets? I turn right and walk for 10 minutes, or left and go home after walking a couple of minutes to the car or bus.
-lots of shops, I'm at Primark, I need the loo. Nearest one, the bus station or the car park dungeon. Again, I'm not going to walk all the way there, then back to the shops, I'm going to Go home as it's a long walk and I'm not doing it twice.
I have a young child in a pushchair. 1 lift, especially when Primark was out of order, or a long diversion into the soon to be closed m&,s.
2 escalators? Seriously!
Little quality of life things would help make this place a destination. I arrived by bus the other day and the escalator was broken. I just walked through cow gate instead. None of the upper shops got a chance of my passing trade.
I'm a teacher by trade, and if queens gate were a student I would be saying, they're doing reasonably well, but there's a lot more they need to do to be excellent, but it wouldn't be much..
Just my own...
