I have great affection for Peterborough Museum and have been visiting there for many years out of personal interest and as an archaeology student. It's a fascinating building with an equally fascinating history, along with some great stories. There's a very nice cafe by the gift shop, and an art gallery on the ground floor that hosts some excellent exhibitions. All of the displays are ranged over several floors and are accessible by stairs or lift. Each section is well presented, although some of the interactive areas have suffered at the hands of overenthusiastic children in recent years (the museum is closing for repairs soon, so maybe these issues will be addressed?) However, the main reason for my review is because we attended a ghost walk hosted by Peterborough Museum recently and it was brilliant. The guide, Mark, was excellent! His delivery was a perfect mix of humour, spookiness and history, and he held our attention throughout. I can thoroughly recommend the museum and especially the ghost walks. I understand that this initiative has been undertaken to boost funding, so do support them as this is well worth the fee! This wasn't cheap, tacky ghoulish entertainment, this was a heritage tour delivered intelligently and with humour. If you're a Peterborian, go and learn about your city. If you're not, go anyway - you'll be amazed at Peterborough's...
Read moreWe visited between Christmas and New Year as we were staying in the area and looked for museums and places open this week. The museum is, in short, excellent.
We went, particularly, to look at the Roman exhibition and hoards of local finds, but discovered also the superb displays covering the entire period from Pangea, pre-history and the Roman invasion and Anglo-Saxon arrivals.
We broke our visit with a time in the cafe, which was quiet at this time of year, but there were still three members of staff (volunteers?) looking after things, so our drinks and cakes arrived very quickly - and were served with a smile - and were very good. We visit many cafes, and the cakes from the Vivacity cafe were moist and clearly freshly-made. The pot of tea and coffee were high quality, all served the way refreshments should be, in proper cups and saucers, not in plastic or recycled cardboard cups.
We learned that they have a collection of over 200,000 artefacts, and reading other reviews we have seen that they regularly change exhibits and displays with items from this collection, so we have put it on our list to come back again every time we are...
Read moreIt's been many years since my last visit but I visited with my 8yr old daughter. Polite and we'll informed receptionist greeted us and detailed what we could take part in that day , including a class making something out of recycled materials for the kids . Started off though with a lovely coffee in the cafe , no bottled water , but boxed water ! Brilliant idea , no plastic used , recycling and eco themed cafe with a small menu offering what looked tasty and decently priced too ( may try food on another day when up town ) Plenty to see and remember including the operating theatre with its erie background noise and a section on how London Brick made their bricks at Fletton . Had a lovely couple of hours there followed by a pizza for lunch in town ! Don't forget the museum is...
