I've experienced Papa's in other locations in the UK Cleethorpes and Scarborough and have yet to have a bad experience despite multiple visits to each. I was very excited to have the Papa's on my doorstep at Crystal Peaks.
However, I have tried the takeaway around 5 or 6 times since its opened and I'm yet to have a decent takeaway meal. I really want this restaurant to succeed and on each poor experience I've said "it'll come good it's new and these or settling in problems". After tonights experience I won't be in any rush to come back to this restaurant again.
Service is always polite and pleasant but is exceptionally slow even when I've been the only one ordering food. I've on two occasions had my order forgotten as the wrong receipt was handed to me and no order passed to the kitchen.
Food has been awful on each occasion I've ordered. Trouble is I live far enough away that it's not worth me coming back to complain. The chips are often stale. They are either overcooked like they have been re-cooked and have that crispy greasy translucent look to them or they are black and chewy as if they have come from a long stay on the bottom of the frier. The battered sausage is always black on the bottom and the batter hardly cooked on top almost like raw batter. Fish approaching burnt on one side and on occasion batter soft and mushy on the top.
This leads me to tonights encounter. My order was for mine and my extended family. The order was quite large but there were no other customers in the takeaway side of the restaurant. When I returned I had a portion of beans missing and what should have been a regular battered sausage and chips looked like the image I have enclosed in this review. For starters that's not a battered sausage. Beyond this I can't even tell what this is meant to be. It smells awful. It smells like fish, had the consistency of well overdone chicken but it had what looked like black stale potato slices sandwiching it together with batter that looks like it has been cooked more than once.
Getting an order wrong happens from time to time, but serving that monstrosity is a step too far even for me who wants this restaurant to succeed. On top of all the other issues I've had I very much doubt I'll be returning, nor would I recommend it to other...
Read moreWent for lunch last week at Papa’s Crystal Peaks, our first time in this Papas, and I have literally never had such incredible service in a restaurant before.
From the moment we arrived the manager Sam greeted us enthusiastically, let us find the perfect table (taking into account our toddler and what would be best for him), and took our order quickly so the food could arrive asap. Midway through the meal a wonderful young lady called Chloe came over to check on our food and was so friendly and fun to talk to, we had a chat about being from the same area and shared an enthusiasm for chip spice! Towards the end as we got ready to leave we got chatting to another lovely person called Abi who went out of her way to compliment my hairstyle and engage us in conversation around the different Papas dotted around the country, she really boosted my spirits. On the way out Sam took the time to show my toddler the fish tank and point out the turtle named Teddy which he was thrilled about.
The food was fantastic, amazing chips (which is rare in a restaurant trying to serve chippy style chips I find) and such a delicious authentic Hull pattie, and the restaurant décor felt very high end and classy. Nice and spacious so even with lots of other guests around it felt like we had some space and privacy. I know how tiring waiting tables is and dealing with the public on your feet all day so I was truly taken aback by the effort, energy and enthusiasm every single staff member showed in making our visit special.
We would have loved to tip but unfortunately couldn’t via card so I wanted to leave a review instead to express our appreciation for the friendliest, most efficient, delicious, promptly-served meal we’ve had in long while. Thank you Papas Crystal Peaks, the best Papas by a...
Read moreIf I could give 0 stars I would! So firstly, we was created by a nice young girl (all the staff looked 16 or younger!!) who got us seated far to close to the toilets, then when the food arrived we had to send 1 meals back, it was a fish pie that was made in a dessert bowl, but the fish was dry, no sauce at all and the top had been that over grilled it was dark brown burnt and you couldn’t even get a knife or folk in it! So the rest of us continued to eat but our meals was probably 2/10, we all had fish and chips. The chips tasted like they had been fried, left to go cold and then refried, we all said the same! They tasted like old burnt chips that someone had tried to reuse. The fish was not great either. The curry sauce was so strong, we found lumps of powder still in it. By this stage we had all finished eating and the fish pie still hadn’t been returned to the table (maybe about 20 mins after sending it back) so we went and asked for a refund but they seemed unsure on what to do because they all seemed very young and inexperienced. The fact that the meal was sent back and a new one didn’t arrive within a timely manner was just poor. We will not be eating there again. We got home about 2 hours ago and I’ve just been sick (I had medium cod and chips with curry). Honestly avoid at all costs. Poor customer service due to inexperience Poor kitchen skills, chips that had obviously been left out and refried, the fish pie that a knife couldn’t even cut through, and powder in the curry sauce. Also, I have a dairy allergy, which normally restaurants had a vegan dessert or 2 but this place don’t offer anything like that so we all left without dessert. I’m tempted to ring and ask for a full refund. I wish I’d of took pictures to show you all...
