Updated - I need to update my review. After I did this review, the staff reached out to me directly to discuss my issues/complaints. As I stated in my original review, the staff rocks. They let me know that they had reached out to corporate to ask for a review of my accounts. They did this on their own and let me know about it. I was notified that both my accounts were reviewed and adjusted. The rate did go up, but not to an exaggerated amount. I waited a month to make sure that the amounts were adjusted correctly, as I was told they would be and since they have been, I am happy to update my original posting. I appreciate everything the team did for me and how involved they got. Not treating me like a number but calling me directly (twice) and working with me to get this fixed. Did I say how much the staff rocks?! So I am adjusting my review and the star rating.
----------- Original Post --------
Let me start by saying that the staff at this facility is fabulous and that is the only reason they get a star. I have never had an issue with the team. They have always been friendly and willing and able to help with anything that has come up or any question I have had. I sold my house, so I have two storage units here. Two months ago I got my first increase, in which I thought $40.00 a month was steep, but since I am facing the same situation anywhere I go, they have me with my hands tied. Now I just got my newest little postcard announcing a new rate increase. If I thought the last one was bad, I am blown away by the newest one. In one fell swoop I am being charged an 80% increase. You read that right, 80 PERCENT. This in my opinion is absolutely highway robbery. The facility knows that they have people between a rock and a hard place. What am I supposed to do, get another moving company and start all over again in another facility? Even if I could afford to do that, finding two units in one facility is almost impossible, now a days. I understand increases being needed with the cost of living increases, but this is just a crazy amount to be charged at one time. I feel as though its a bait and switch type of situation. They advertise low affordable prices, especially if you order online, and then as soon as they can, they just dig right in and so what if you don't like it, then move.....but like I said, move to where? Talk about taking advantage of the situation to pad your own pockets. What cost increase is worth an 80% price increase? There is no extra maintenance then when I first moved in, its not in a climate controlled situation so the heating costs have not gone up. One of my units doesn't even offer a light inside the rental unit, the light is only in the hallway by motion sensor, so I moved by flashlight to pack things correctly and safely inside the unit. What justification is there for this type...
Read moreOn January 7th 2017 A group of us were moving my son from Wilton N.H. To Mass. I called Extra Space Storage in Abington that morning from N.H. and had a GREAT conversation with Debby. She helped me over the phone to pick a storage Unit based on the size of the truck I rented and the contents we were moving. At the end of our conversation she told us to be careful because a snow storm was just starting to hit Ma. and that she would be there when we arrived, by the time we hit the road it had JUST started to snow a bit. The closer we got to Ma, the HARDER it snowed. Traffic dropped to less than 5 miles an hour before we even hit the Mass line, the snow became white out conditions. All our vehicles involved with the moving, had to pull over a couple of times on the highway to clear our wipers so we could see. Spin outs all the way to and thru mass. What should have taken 1 hour and 45 minutes driving time took us over four and a half hours. I called Debby in a panic from the road just to see if the place was still open. She assured me she was going nowhere until we arrived and gave us specific instructions how to drive right to our unit when we get there! Again she told us to take our time and be extra careful. When we finally arrived safe, but NOT so sound, Debby greeted us right away. We were sooo stressed and cold and wet. She was amazing. Her friendly CARING side did wonders for us all. She actually walked thru the storm to our unit which was way out back just to be sure everything was ok. We realized after about ten minutes of trying hard to unload in the height of the storm that we just couldn’t do any more. We talked to Debby about it and we all made a plan for the night and would re group in the morning. I am soooo thankful Extra Space Storage had an amazing CARING person behind that desk. It really makes a difference in such a terrible situation. Deb!!! You ROCK girl!!! Tamara Silvia P.S. Our storage unit was...
Read more1- Dehumidifiers “DONT RUN in the winter” even if it’s 55 degrees, humid and raining, so everything I had there boxes included were wet to the touch and falling apart. Since the units are essentially open to the air (they won’t tell you this, but up above the doors are WIDE OPEN and you could chuck a baseball over and have it in your storage unit without opening it.
2- RATS. Many items were chewed. Many dropping found. The new place down the street (uhaul) at least runs dehumidifiers 24/7 and uses traps in each unit, something CubeSmart should be doing.
3- arbitrarily RAISING RENT BY 60%! I reserved, paid and maintained my unit via the web portal but they sneak the rent hike notifications via SNAIL MAIL. My autopay jumped over 60% and didn’t find out burl I saw my bank statement.
4- insurance. The UHaul insurance structure is much more reasonable and I ended up paying less with insurance and a PROPERLY humidity controlled unit that had 24/7 access for far lless money.
5 Chuck WAS nice when he got me to sign up. He pressured me into a good review, which you can see my original I obliged him with a great initial review, which I have now revised based on my horrific experience. I was assured that price increases were rare and that surely extra space was the place to choose. But when they snuck me a 60% increase all he did was blame corporate, and hd the AUDACITY to call his choice to deactivate the dehumidifiers and “act of god” and refused to cover the damages to my TV and other items permanently damaged by the neglect. The guy lives there for Pete’s sake, no excuses for not doing the bare minimum of checking the dehumidifiers.
-Calling the corporate office was an automated nightmare, it took 6 calls to get a non-answer. Don't waste your time with Extra Space and their shady underhanded business tactics and wet rat...
