So first off, lets talk about the website. The website is completely outdated. Not only that but the rates are advertised in a very confusing matter. You have hourly rates and song rates. Now for the song rates, it said $55 per song without mix and $100 per song with mix. We did the project by song, not by the hour. The deal was to record 10 songs. No mixing or mastering. So you'd think we'd fit in that $55 bracket, right? Well we were charged $85 per song. Supposedly $65 for each song and a extra $20 per song to add a quote on quote "pro" engineer and told that "Oh, the prices have increased since then". Well why don't you update your website to reflect that?
Now im not the artist here. I just work with him. So I wasn't actually there for most of the studio sessions. However, I did come to one and boy oh boy...my first thought was..."Wth did we pay $850 for?!". It reminds me of Skate Town on Old National, only mini sized. I wish he would have told me it looked like that. My apt looks better than that in all honesty. On the site it said 40 ppl could fit in the booth. I doubt it can fit 20. The control room looks an absolute mess with a bunch of beat up gear, old outdated pro tools software and plugins. My plugins are more up to date than theirs. That tells you somethin. The auto tune they use is from YEARS ago. How do I know? Because I had that same one....YEARRRS ago. 🙄
Now everything as far as recording seemed to go smooth. The studio was still functional and capable of producing good recordings at least. The bulk of my issues came when it was time to receive the files I needed. Now I paid for a pro recording engineer to make sure things went smooth. When I was sent the files, I was sent all kinds of irrelevant files that had nothing to do with the song and I had to go through, find the right recordings, delete the irrelevant ones, piece them together and edit them to be mixed. The files did not line up with the song time wise at all. That shouldn't happen. It was a nightmare to go through this with each song.
While going through all this madness, they lost a whole song! We had to record a whole song all over again! Even more frustrating!
And it gets better. They ended up losing certain adlibs and parts for other songs as well and the artist had to come in AGAIN to record those parts over.
After this, I was told that the engineer did not know certain things about sending recording session files to clients. I thought you said I was paying for a PRO who knew what he was doing? Why does he need to be taught? And why am I still being charged that extra $20 per hour for a "pro" engineer?
Now I cant speak for no one else but mark my words when I say that I, Amir Rashad Grant, will NEVER step foot in this studio EVER again. Not even for free. Why? Because the headache from this studio is costly enough!
Dont believe me? Go ahead. Go ahead and schedule a tour. Go ahead and see for yourself if that booth can really fit 40 people like they advertise. Go on in and see all the beat up acoustic treatment and beat up equipment except their ONE vocal mic. Their "Godly' neumann U87 that costs $3000. You got a $3000 mic but your software and plugins are outdated and your studio looks like a hole in the wall?
Clearly, the priorities here aren't your music.
Oh yeah...don't forget to bring...
