Update: The thing is you guys have shown pattern of denying requests, theres another reviewer where you guys replied she did not meet the criteria (which is disclosing information publicly, unacceptable)
s deeply concerning to witness Edge Fitness’ discriminatory practices and disregard for customer rights, particularly under laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Publicly responding to a customer by disclosing that their medical documentation does not meet your “criteria” is not only inappropriate but also raises potential HIPAA violation concerns. It is unacceptable for a business to publicly address sensitive medical issues, even indirectly, in a manner that may humiliate or shame the customer. This is discriminatory and reflects a lack of understanding or respect for individuals with disabilities.
As someone who has personally experienced the unfair treatment and refusal to allow membership cancellation due to a disability, I am appalled by the pattern of behavior exhibited by this gym. Denying someone the right to cancel based on valid medical reasons or disabilities shows a blatant disregard for the law and ethical business practices. This type of conduct appears to be part of a larger systemic issue at this gym, as evidenced by other similar complaints.
The experiences described in this review also highlight alarming behavior from upper management, including retaliation, abuse of power, and a refusal to address legitimate concerns. Cancelling memberships as a form of retaliation against customers who speak out is both unprofessional and unethical. The general manager’s failure to resolve these concerns in good faith and their insistence on protecting the offending manager rather than listening to customers reflects poor leadership. To make matters worse, fabricating claims about customer requests to cancel memberships, as described here, demonstrates a complete lack of accountability and integrity.
Edge Fitness must be held accountable for these discriminatory and retaliatory practices. Discrimination against individuals with disabilities, refusal to accommodate medical situations, and retaliatory actions against members for expressing their concerns are not just bad business practices—they are violations of federal law. If others have experienced similar treatment, I would strongly encourage them to explore their legal options under the ADA and other applicable laws. A class-action lawsuit may very well be warranted if this pattern of discrimination and abuse of power continues.
To Edge Fitness management: You have an obligation to treat your members with dignity and respect, particularly those who are protected under disability and anti-discrimination laws. I urge you to review your policies, train your staff on proper accommodations under the ADA, and immediately cease practices that involve retaliation or dismissive treatment of customer complaints. Failure to take these issues seriously could have serious legal and reputational consequences.
This review should serve as a warning to others considering this gym. Until meaningful change occurs, it is clear that Edge Fitness does not prioritize its members' rights,...
Read moreThis is going to be a lengthy post but seeing as my voice wasn't heard at the gym I need to make a statement. Last week my partner & I had an interaction with an employee. We were working out on the far side of the gym, furthest from the front desk, when we were approached by a young caucasian female, she interrupted our workout & told us we could not be wearing slides. I wasn't quite sure how we were pointed out. Now I have no issues with abiding by any rules that go along with the gym, but I strongly feel we were targeted, being two people of color. We have never once have had this issue. We asked multiple other caucasian presenting people if they had been spoken to seeing as they were wearing slides & they said no & never have been. We had reached out to the general manager as we felt extremely uncomfortable going back to the gym. He immediately responded by shutting the conversation down, saying 100% was not about race, with no regards to how we felt or our opinion on the matter. He said we would speak in person. A few days past & we finally decided to go, to only be stared at & feeling even more uncomfortable. Today as we are walking in my partner states to an employee, "Thank you so much for being friendly because not everyone is like that here, (said name) I believe is racist." The general manager then proceeds to track us down & speak with us. Only to talk about how this (said name) felt uncomfortable. He then proceeded to say it would be best if we would cancel our membership. Not ONCE was our voice heard. WE were uncomfortable, WE were embarrassed. Instead of caring about the customer he immediately asked we take down our reviews, that's all that was cared about, image. Instead of trying to understand our frustration, we were asked to leave & then escorted out of the gym as if we were being violent or as if there was an altercation. How did we make you feel uncomfortable for having a voice? Don't we have freedom of speech? We are not only woman of color, we also are part of the LGBTQ community and the only one in the building at the time of the incident. WE are the customers, shouldn't we feel safe, shouldn't we feel comfortable in a place where we pay to work out? Now we will probably lose our membership because of this but I will not shy away from what is right. I am PROUD to be a person of color & I will have my voice heard. Unfortunately going to corporate is the only solution. I will not be silenced. It was disheartening & belittling to be escorted out of the gym simply because we wanted our voice to be heard. The reality is he told us "said name" is now uncomfortable/crying from us calling her racist? The privilege she had ultimately got us escorted out of the gym. As she was laughing and smiling (when he said she was actually crying). Being called racist is not the same as experiencing racism, please edge.. have some...
Read moreUpdate: Please refer to Felicia's review for additional information. (It is unlikely that Edge Fitness will provide a response to this review, as it appears to suggest an acknowledgement of their lack of ability to effectively address customer issues.). The upper management at this establishment has exhibited egregious corruption. Specifically, the general manager retaliated against me by cancelling my membership after I wrote reviews detailing the harassment I experienced from one of the managers. Despite notifying the general manager of my discomfort, he unequivocally stated that his manager would never engage in such behavior. Additionally, he promised to help problem solve and ensure our comfort during our next visit to the gym, but failed to follow through. Instead, upon returning to the gym, my partner and I were subjected to the manager staring/laughing looking our direction, instead of trying to address our concerns in person like they said they would.
The following day, I expressed my dissatisfaction to an employee and opined that the manager may be racist. In response, the general manager summoned my partner and me to his office, claiming that the manager was in tears due to my statement. He then requested that we remove our reviews. A competent business person would have taken steps to professionally address the situation and validate our concerns. However, the general manager proceeded to escort us out of the establishment, as though we were causing a disturbance. As we were leaving, we observed the manager who was purportedly crying laughing with other staff members. The next day, we were informed that our membership had been cancelled. We subsequently learned from the Cranston Edge fitness club that the general manager had lied and falsely claimed that we had requested the cancellation.
Despite requesting a copy of the cancellation notice, the general manager has failed to provide one, even after a month. It is apparent that the establishment is selectively choosing to cancel memberships based on a power dynamic that is both immature and inappropriate. So if any of you have trouble cancelling your membership, please refer to this review, because I do see this establishment abusing their power in the future. Had the upper management acted responsibly, this situation would not have escalated to the point of involving lawyers. It is important to note that I did not request the cancellation of my membership. The establishment cancelled it in response to my google review and to avoid addressing a customer's legitimate concerns. This case exemplifies how poor business practices and power abuse can result in damaging...
