I really want to love this place again! BDC was the Gold Standard of Type 1 Diabetes care when I was kid. I never had the privilege of being seen there until I became an adult and jumped at the opportunity once they started providing adult care. I've been a patient for many years now. No, Im not the perfect diabetic but by far not the worst even though Im treated as if I am. My Dr is very cold, rushes through my appointments and doesn't seem to care to listen. I have to ask about treatments and other diabetic management options I learn about on my own. If I dont ask, she wont offer up the education. When I brought this to her attention, she told me I could just see someone else because she doesnt have enough time in the day to offer a more caring experience because she has other patients she has to see. I understand her perspective but that response was beyond inappropriate. At one point, I left 3 different messages over 3 weeks regarding a prior auth request on the Diabetic Educator line and no one ever called me back. They couldnt explain why, but did ultimately get it worked out to which I was grateful for. The person that sets appointments is very dry and unwelcoming over the phone. Not saying everyone has to give service with a smile on each call, but some level of kindness would be beneficial since she is represents the beginning of the patient experience. Everything Ive mentioned costs ZERO money to fix! Its just a matter of shifting the staffs energy and attitudes to embrace a positive and understanding experiences for their patients. I dont know what happened to the BDC but I do hope the Adult side can return to providing its quality of care and service that it was once renowned for having not long ago. BDC is and always serve as the hub of Diabetic care, education and research. Please treat those of us with this terrible disease with kindness. We...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThe ironic thing is, they are so invested in all their groundbreaking research that they forget to attend to their real life patients. I was diagnosed with type one over 25 years ago. I attended the Barbara Davis Childrens clinic back then and received some of the best care available at the time. But apparently the best care stops at the childrenās clinic because my experience with the adult clinic is some of the worst care I've EVER received. I started pump therapy on a Monday about 3 weeks ago and apart from an educational training with the companies educator was offered no other medical support or resources. This might have been fine had I not experienced 4 consecutive days of consistent hypoglycemia. I reached out to my provider several times, unaware that she was out of the office, and put a call in to the on-call provider Tuesday night; as I was unbelievably exhausted from STILL being low. I spoke with the call service and was promised a call back from the on-call provider in 20 minutes. I have still not received a call back. I was finally able to get in touch with someone to help me lower my doses but it took several days. While my doctor was apologetic when I finally got ahold of her I havenāt heard anything from her since. No check up on doses, follow-up appointments scheduled etc. I dont know if this is how itās usually done but it seems that SOME guidance/accessibility to a health care provider, or at least an on-call provider that calls you back, during this transition would be helpful. And if the transition to a pump after 25 years of manual injections doesnāt warrant some kind of medical attention, several days of hypoglycemia at least should. Iāve had diabetes fro 25 years and have never felt as physically horrible, not to mention almost entirely unsupported and un-guided, as I have since becoming a patient at Barbara Davis...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI have been coming to this clinic for 18 years. I didn't like that when I was younger, tests were run and things were discussed during my appointment but come my next appointment it's like we never talked about them. The Dr. never followed up with what we talked about or what a test that was ordered came out to be. I was almost about to leave this place after coming her for so long. I almost never wanted to come here because it's like they were lecturing me and judging me about how badly I don't take care of my diabetes. Yet they never really seemed to show any care or concern or follow up or help you get better in anything. Even when I had concerns about things they were just blown off and i was rushed out the door.
BUT THEN.... Rachel Garcetti, PA came along and changed everything. She is by far the BEST provider I have ever had in my life. She is a beautiful person inside and out. She really cares about you and tries to help. She knows your family and it doesn't seem like she is a provider but more like a friend. She follows up with every single test if it's good results or bad. She even brings it up again at your next appointment just to make sure. she shows concern for things that I've been telling previous providers for years. She brings it up on her own. She tries to get you to feeling better and does many thingsā to help you to get there. She spends a lot of time with you and never makes you feel rushed or like your taking a long time out of her day. It's honestly a joy now to come to her and make sure my diabetes is under control.she has honestly saved my life. I was a bad diabetic and pretty much gave up on trying to take good care of myself. But Rachel has helped me in so many ways. I can't express how awesome she is. She is waaaayyyy better than any of the docs I've seen here. This woman is going...
