While at the photo locations, Joe showed us the best places to be to obtain the photo my mind envisioned and often encouraged us to look at our natural surroundings differently. Even when the weather was not a typical nice and sunny day, Joe turned our outing into a learning experience and we found water puddles with reflections, rock formations with texture, leading lines, deeper colors, etc. He encouraged us to try bracketing photos (which I was not very familiar with) and he was very good at explaining the benefits of doing so. Joe was very knowledgeable about the area (where to stand, best time of day to be there for nice lighting, etc.) and was thoroughly respectful of nature and the parks we were visiting.
While on various photo locations, Joe often checked on us to see if we had any questions and made sure we were safe (sometimes the area required us to be in steep areas or higher elevations). He made sure that we arrived at locations to beat the crowds at the most desired times of the day (sunrise/sunset). Joe is not one of those photography instructors who rushed out of the vehicle and set up his tripod to reserve the best spot for himself in order that he could have the perfect photos. He made certain that we were on location at the perfect time and we were in the best possible positions to capture photos when the light would shine at just the right moment.
Joe was very patient with us in the classroom setting and demonstrated several ideas on improving our post processing techniques for our photos.
Joe is very passionate about photography and was always eager to share his ideas and explain different concepts and techniques to us. I am so glad that I was able to spend my vacation by taking one of Joe’s workshops. I would highly recommend Joe as an instructor and look forward to participating in some of his...
Read moreI was a participant in Joesph's Winter in Rocky Mountain National Park photo workshop. This was my first experience with a guided photo workshop in the field. I was very pleased with Joseph's approach to guiding and teaching as he recognized my needs and abilities (as well as other participants) and adapted continuously to optimize the experience and learning. He was adapt a reading the weather conditions and adjusting our schedule to optimize photographic opportunities. His in the field coaching and guidance was especially helpful. I am a very experienced photographer and outdoor adventurer but have never put this together for a winter outing, so Joseph's guidance on all the details of photographing in these conditions helped build experience quickly and gain confidence to do this routinely. I also appreciated the group support and got over my predisposition to go solo for a good photographic experience. Joseph's experience with outdoor adventuring and landscape nature photography come together very well for a great experience. The workshop emphasized field sessions but there was also opportunity to get some insight in to Joseph's post processing techniques for landscape photos which added to my repertoire and help me get the final results visualized in the field. I would highly recommend this event and Joseph's workshops in general to anyone interested in a challenging and fun...
Read moreIn late Sept/Oct 2020, I attended the “Fall Colors of the San Juans, 2020”, based in Ouray Colorado. This was my first photography workshop with Joseph Thomas. He definitely did not disappoint! First of all, Joe is a nice person and I enjoyed his personality. While we had to work with Covid-related restrictions (masks, distancing), Joseph made sure that all participants felt safe so that we would have a successful workshop. The timing of his workshop could not have been better as the fall colors in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado were spectacular. As in any workshop, Joe got us to his photo locations that were best suited for the weather, so the schedule could change at any time. The sunrise/mid-day and sunset locations were beautiful. Joe was completely available for questions on composition, camera settings, pano set-up, etc. He was available to all participants at all times. The classroom work was very informative with regards to the many facets of photography and post-processing. I plan to attend more of his workshops next year and highly recommend to photographers of all skill levels. Linda Henderson,...
