Surf's Up Seafood Market — Local services in Avon

Attention Marylanders REAL STEAMED BLUE CRABS!! 5 stars is all that is allowed, but they deserve a couple more. Last year we got a bushel of live crabs, thinking we should steam our own. It's hard to find blue crabs outside of Maryland, let alone find them steamed the way we know. This year, we decided to pick them up steamed. They were amazing! The staff is super friendly and helpful. We have steamed crabs at home 4 to 5 times a year, but these were easily the best we have had this season. We drove up from Hatteras Village, and would certainly recommend traveling up, or down, to Surf's Up. Not sure what the other reviews were talking about, the cartons were packed (overflowing) with live crabs last year, and awesomely seasoned steamed crabs this year. It's not uncommon to find 1 or 2 mush crabs in a dozen, but we only found 1 in the entire half bushel we picked. Prices were more than reasonable, as we can easily expect to pay over $300 a bushel for #2 males in MD, a bushel (market price at the time) was only $180. Great Quality, Reasonable Prices, Friendly Staff.

Stopped at a few Seafood places on Hatteras Island in an attempt to find blue crabs with no luck, when I asked the other shops where to find some they all told me to drive the hour back to Wanchese. Luckily I found Surf’s Up Seafood so I didn’t have too. I stopped in early in the week to ask about availability and prices for later in the week. The gentleman that helped me was super nice and informative, especially since I wasn’t buying anything on this visit. Called later in the week as we discussed and ordered 1/2 bushel to be picked up at 4pm. Walked in the store at 3:55 and the crabs were being put into the box, perfect timing. Got my crabs and some paper for the table and was out in no time, but didn’t feel rushed, staff is super friendly. We dug into them a short time later and these were some of the best crabs I’ve had. They were cooked perfectly, seasoned right and super full/fat. Will definitely be stopping by again on the next trip down as they have one of the best selections I’ve seen down here for fish and other seafood items. I cannot recommend this place enough! Going to be stopping in every time we come down. We were down in Avon, NC with some friends for the week. We were trying to find fresh shrimp for my sons 5th birthday and everywhere we called was closed! We walked in with just three minutes before they closed and were greeted by the nicest man asking what we needed. Without hesitation he asked if we wanted them seasoned and steamed. Not usually what you expect when someone is about to close. I told the man at the counter that he made one 5 years old night because all he wanted for his birthday dinner was shrimp. He proceeded to ask if I was my 5 year old which cheesecake would he want for his birthday from the display freezer! I was almost in tears. Here we are running in last minute and then this man had the sweetest heart. Cannot recommend enough! Also their old bay butter and cocktail sauce we got was amazing!
