I recently rated the Avalon Park Apartments in Tigard on Yelp because of lack of sleep. I am finally out after 9 months of living hell!!! This place has ripped me off with a total amount of $2887.50 for breaking my lease. Charges for 1.5 X months and they also charged for the first month "free" that they offer but apparently we need to pay if we break the lease. It would have been cheaper to stay two more months and not break the lease($1135 X 2 months). When I gave them my 30 day notice they gave me a different quote without mentioning that I would need to pay the "first-free month" if I break the lease so I made the decision to move out and cut my losses. I will look at it carefully in the contract because it seems unfair and they already rented the place to someone else. As mentioned above, I left this place after 9 months of very poor sleep because the neighbors below are heavy set and snore all night. They snore so loud that in order to get some sleep I used ear plugs and stump on the floor a couple times to make them stop(and of course they complaint about it with the office because they called the next day) I was able to record the snoring in my phone so I wish I could post the sounds in this site. I got into an argument with the big guy below and he said that he didn't give a s.. and that if I didn't like it to move out. I spoke to management about it and they were completely rude saying that I would need to renew my contract in order to move into a new apartment or that I can move out or wait until my lease was up. I just spoke to them on the phone and they say that I did not need to renew a contract contrary to what they have previously said. As a piece of advise I would record any conversations with them when issues occur. They never seemed to care about anything other than protecting a new contract. The place looks great but the walls are paper thin, cheap remodeling materials and you can hear everything that happens in the neighbors at night. The office staff are also constantly entering the apartment at least twice per month for some excuse due to construction or other activities. The place is constantly noisy with all the remodeling process and there is no free parking unless you manage to get back from work early enough. All the carports are for rent if you want a descent place to park. I honestly do not recommend this place so that you might not waste your money and get less than professional service. This is by far the worst place I have ever lived in and I left with a really bad experience with their staff. I do not recommend it to anyone unless you have experience living in a third world country where everyone is up to rip you off with your money . I will pursue this issue with BBB to see if they can do something about their less than ethical business practices. Good luck finding a descent...
Read moreWhatever you do, do not rent from this horrible company. No matter how awesome your potential new apartment is, go far away, and fast. You will be treated like a subhuman for no reason. Extremely rude management who cares NOTHING about customer service in any way. You cannot call them and ask anything without being treated like dirt. We've been here for a year and suddenly out of the blue, got a "no cause lease termination" (polite speak for "eviction without court" or "get out, we don't want you here anymore") and we have NEVER had a complaint, NEVER been late with rent, NEVER caused any problems at all. They gave us 30 days to get out, for no reason, and yes it's legal. I have rented apartments for over 10 years from various management groups and this is the only place I have ever had issues with.
Reply to TPM: I've tried and tried and tried to get hold of your offices. No one answers or cares. It's impossible to speak with anyone there. I was told by the manager of my community that "this happens all the time. I don't know if you're familiar with living in apartments but this is really common." Word for word quote. I told the manager, yes, I have lived in many, many apartments for over 10 years, rented out roughly 8 apartments during this time with NO ISSUES EVER. I have never had a complaint, eviction, been late on rent, at any place I have ever rented. The manager told me "we aren't allowed to tell you why you have to go." I told her well why is it a secret? If we've done something wrong, or against the lease handbook terms, why have we not gotten ANY notice of violation? It's funny how you are trying to cover your a* and make it look like your company gives a s** but you don't. We've done NOTHING wrong and I know you're just going to rent this place out the second we leave. And that's fine, that's your right. It's also my right to talk about it wherever I want online and warn people that your company has shady practices which have no concern over the people you rent to. Giving a working family 30 days to find a new place in this market, to come up with thousands plus in new security deposits, is not easy for everyone to come up with so fast on NO NOTICE but 30 days. You have no idea what other expenses may have occurred in their lives recently because of unforeseen events. Because of you we are going to be homeless soon. And I will let everyone I know about our experience with...
Read moreEdit: After posting this review and reaching out directly to Tandem Property Management they waived the lease breaking fee. I greatly appreciate them doing that but it doesn't change my opinion. I shouldn't have had to write a review and leave them an upset voicemail to get this fixed.
Original Review: We were recently forced to move out of this complex due to a change in ownership. The new ownership advised us that they were not doing leases anymore but switching to a month to month system instead. Along with this our monthly rent would have gone up by $300+ per month.
This rent increase is not something that we could afford so we (along with many current residents) are being forced to move. Apparently all you need to do to raise the rent by a ridiculous amount is add the term "luxury" to the description. I say this because the units have not been remodeled or renovated in any way to justify such an increase.
But as much as all of this sucks it is what they are trying to do to us now that prompted me to write this review.
The manager of the property (Chelsea something something) is trying to charge us a lease breaking fee for turning in our keys 1 day prior to our official move out date. Never mind we had already paid our rent through the end of our lease. Never mind the fact that we were not told we would be charged a fee for turning the keys in a day early.
We decided to turn the keys in a day early because we were moving over the weekend (like most people) but the manager that is required to do our walkthrough doesn't work weekends. My wife had finished cleaning the unit on Saturday and our last day was a Sunday. They also warned us against turning them in a day late because we would definitely be charged for that. So that we wouldn't have to return to the complex on Sunday to turn in the key and then go back Monday for the walkthrough my wife simply asked if she could turn in the keys before she left Saturday. They said yes, that's no problem without ever telling us that would be considered breaking our lease. If we had known at the time we would have simply gone out of our way to turn them in on the exact date.
I don't know if this is just how Tandem does business or if it is a case of an overzealous manager trying to milk every penny she can from departing residents but I can't recommend this complex with the way they treat...
