Food Lion — Local services in Blacksburg

Update (2/18/22): I have stopped using the Food Lion Online Order system and now order directly through Instacart. I can order groceries and provide specific instructions, pick my own replacements or request no replacements without issue (see below). I can even get Food Lion delivery now ordering directly through Instacart. Ordering online takes a while as opposed to just going in the store, but its what is needed at this time. Upgraded from a 2 star rating to a 4 star). I do 90% of my grocery shopping at the Food Lion on North Main and usually have no problems with groceries, the Deli or the Pickup system. However, this morning my husband went to pick up my pre-order of 2 family-sized chickens and the person working in the deli said they had placed them out in the chicken area where anyone could have bought them and hoped that they were not purchased by anyone before we got there. Our scheduled pickup time was 11 am and he was there at 10:45 am. I could see them putting them out for anyone to buy if we hadn’t picked them up on time, but please…what would we have done if they sold to someone else before my husband got to them. This leads me to believe that in the future I will be unable to TRUST that anything I order thru their deli will actually be available to me at my scheduled pickup time. I just want to let you know that as a new resident of Blacksburg I am absolutely delighted to have the Food Lion within 2 miles of our home. You seem to have almost every item I need for my staples groceries and the produce is always fresh. But more than anything, I just love the young folk you hire as checkers and aisle attendents. I am a senior and when I have inquired about the location of anything your employees have directed me right to it or walked me right to it. When I have a big cart I always opt for full service check out since it is clear that your employees service my 30.items is faster than a ten item self-service checker. I am so pleased you employ enough checkers to make this option a great choice. As a senior citizen, I prefer the face-to-face interaction with the checker. Food shopping is a boring task but if you have a nice interaction at the end, as I have had with every one of your employees, it makes it something to look forward to. Although I only come in two or three times a week, I really love bantering with your young checkers. I absolutely love this store and the young folk manning the registers. Please pass on my praises. I visited this establishment to satisfy a late night craving of an Italian sub. To my delight I was able to find an Italian sub within the store. While my expectations were low due to Food Lion not being know for their subs, It did exceed my expectations and was not entirely crusty. Lets start with the bread shall we; it was pretty much tasteless and I wish it had more crunch to it. Although, due to the sub being refrigerated for obvious reasons it was too soft for my well developed bread palette. (Tip: Giant has really good baguettes for no reason) Now, for the lettuce is was again pretty much tasteless and lacked the much needed crunch. It was soggy which was a travesty and extremely disappointed. Now this is where the sub becomes passable, the meat on the sandwich really carried to this 3 star review. The Meat had a strong taste and I can still taste the pastrami in my mouth which idk how I feel about that, but nonetheless if you are looking for an Italian sub I would recommend visiting another...
