Rooks is our local game store. My partner and I moved to Bozeman about 4 months ago and enjoy having a store so close. I collect 40k, we both paint miniatures, and both enjoy board and card gaming. The shop is close, convenient, and the staff (normally) helpful. Over the last four months we bought christmas, thanksgiving, and birthday gifts as well as the usual supplies of paint / dice / card sleeves.
We recenty started playing pokemon TCG, we bought both intro packs and four of the decks as well as a few boosters. Earlier my wife went in to treat ourselves to a metal deck so we could game over the snowy weekend. We were recommended a set, took it back, opened it up, and realised it wasnt quite right. It was an advanced deck, w had only been playing a few weeks, some of the pokemon required energy cards we didnt have etc. We packaged it up, and drove back to the store 30 minutes later. Again my wife went inside only to be told this time that refunds are not possible / allowed. My wife explained the situation, we just want to swap it straight over, no hassle, the item was pristine, literally 6 seconds of hot glue and you can put it back on the shelf. Everyones happy.
"No, no, no, you'll have to come back on monday at xxx time, or on this day at this time, to speak with a manager"..... Ok, but can we just swap it over? easy as that? ..."No"
So my partner comes out, explains the situation. We cant use it, we cant get a refund, it is terrible weather and we drove here twice. We just want to give you guys thirty bucks and play with some new pokemon cards.
So I have to go into the store to speak with the staff member. I explain I am unwell. I am in a high risk covid group and don't really want to keep driving around to sort out something that is so simple. The store member proceeded to tell me in detail just how much of an inconvenience this was to him. How it wasn't really ok. How I should use the deck and the individual cards. How "She" wanted it (I assume he meant my paying customer wife).
After a few minutes of what was a pretty embarrassing display I thought to myself, "I'm not going to come back here again". As a customer, I had to be the adult, I had to walk the staff member through the basics of retail. I was the one who had to try to move the situation forward as no alternative was offered except, go away and come back next week. Not a lot of fun when you feeling really quite unwell, have already drove to the store twice in difficult conditions and under difficult circumstances.
In reality, we will go there again, to buy paint and smaller items. We don't want to buy it from amazon, and really don't mind if its a buck or three extra. However, this was far from the "local and friendly game store experience" and not really how we wanted to spend a...
Read moresuper friendly and helpful staff, even most of the customers seem to be super kind and helpful. If you want to learn to play any game there everyone is willing to help you. The owner is a really nice guy, and can often be found here playing games with customers. Dont let anyone scare you, they are super sweet and a really nice guys even though some can seem kinda standoffish at first. Its really not their intention. After you get to know everyone they are amazing people! Nice selection of games, and plenty of board games to choose from! they hold tournaments for magic and 40k, as well as a few other things on occasion. The building is always really clean, and the second story is entirely dedicated to space for you and your friends to hang out and play some games. There is literally an entire wall of board games to...
Read moreMy boyfriend and I visit here frequently because we have a newly discovered love for "escape room games". Everytime we have been here the staff have been so awesome. Unfortunately we have played all of the games of the brand that we like (exit the game). But one of the staff recommended the unlock escape adventures but we didn't really like it. Went back and told a gentleman on the staff what we didn't like about the unlock games so he then recommended 3 games from his knowledge of other similar games. He even went out of his way to research similiar games after finding out what we liked about exit the game and found another one on the same scale which we ended up going with & loved! (Detective : a modern crime board game). Everytime I've ever been in this store I've had nothing but great...
