Anytime Fitness — Local services in Cape Coral

I used Anytime Fitness (AF) Santa Barbara Blvd, Cape Coral for many years paying monthly. It had some good classes. The class instructors went downhill and then they eliminated the free classes I enjoyed and replaced with individual paying classes that were not at convenient times for me. I did them for a while but they were not a great value for someone who was self motivated. All this before COVID. I went into office to cancel membership for husband and myself because we were not using the gym early in the year. We ended up being convinced to put on hold and not cancel because of the fees they would charge us to cancel and guilted into why cancel when we might support a small business and return after Covid. Now we have been charged (November) annual renewal fees on both accounts (unused for over 9-12 months) and since one of our credit cards has been changed, a late fee of 44$ (even though it is only 14 days late when they notified me via a collection service of a $15 charge). To cancel, we have to reactivate both accounts, pay a months fee for each and then they will cancel in 30 days. So 44 + 15 + 30+ 32 = $121 to cancel a monthly membership that was about $30 per month for each of us. ANYTIME FITNESS is like a back loaded investment and should be ashamed of their ridiculous and ongoing "contract". They are not your local small business but an owner using the contractual small print to extort last fees from those canceling. Anytime Fitness is ruining their goodwill and reputation by enforcing this policy. I am not under any Covid related duress but I have empathy for all the members who are facing similar frustrations and are being held hostage by a gym. Worst experience. Have been going to the gym for years. My gym closed down at the beginning of this year and my fiancé and I had to make a switch. Tried 2 other gyms before coming to Anytime. Unfortunately the gym is too small. Every time my fiance and I came there would only be one treadmill available. Some of the equipment was old and dated. Made it hard to use. Cable machines and squat racks were always taken. Went to cancel since we can’t utilize the gym at our convenience (they suggest using the app to see how busy but that doesn’t change that equipment isn’t available and we can’t come later or earlier due to work). They are charging me $20 every 2 weeks which I can’t cancel unless I move or have a doctor’s note saying I am disabled. So now I have to remember a year from when I signed up to call and tell them to cancel me. Had something similar with another local gym and they happily took care of the customers and made it right.
