This is an excellent find. I've been wanting to come here since I moved out to Ches last December and Friday was that day. I popped in around 2pm and there was hardly a customer in the store. Best kept secret, definitely, but not for long. This is without a doubt the flagship Dick's Sporting Goods in the area. It's bigger than the next largest one out at Lynnhaven Mall. In fact, it's almost the size of a Super Walmart.
I was here to pick up a new pair of Cross Training shoes, and knowing what I wanted, I was able to find the shoe immediately. I flagged down one of the ladies working in the department and she asked my size, punched it into a palm sized device and a couple of moments later the exact shoe I requested, not a size larger or smaller, arrived. I took them, put them on and tested them. The entire time talking with the helpful lady working the department. After testing to my satisfaction I boxed them, said thanks and walked to the front. There was only a brief moment's wait for a register to open, and again I encountered a super friendly and helpful employee. Purchase complete and I was on my way.
I want to point out that I interacted with 3 employees during my visit, the greeter, the lady in the shoe department and the final lady at the register. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Cheerful even, as if they were happy to be there. I'm talking customer support out of the wazoo. It really showed. If they keep that level of service up then I think DSG may be on to something that may other brick and mortar retailers and even airlines are could learn from.
An easy 5 star visit.
---- 2018 update ----
I had a rotten experience here on my last visit. It pains me to write this review after having a couple of stellar experiences here, especially when the store first opened however my latest visit sucked.
I was there to buy a pair of cross fit shoes. I already knew what I wanted and when I reached the shoe dept I picked up the shoe I needed, a New Balance, and took it one of the 3 employees hanging out in the dept, a tall skinny guy with tattoo sleeves on both arms.
He went to the back and came out with 2 boxes, neither which was the size I needed. I did give one pair a try and they were to small, and the other pair was obviously to large. At that point he said that was all they had and asked if I wanted to try the Nike's. No thank's I said, I wanted the New Balance. I was headed out to Virginia Beach and was going to ask him if he could check inventory and I would be happy to stop by and get them at one of the locations at Pembroke or Lynnhaven. However he disappeared and never came back. I waited about 10 minutes looking around and waiting for him or the other 2 employees that were hanging out there when I arrived. No sign of the guy or the others. I left...
BTW I ended up at Kohl's which is in sight right across the interstate from DICKS and found the shoes I was looking for there. You guys lost a sale.
Will probably be a while before I...
Read moreMy wife and I came to this store looking for some fitness equipment. Several of the items that we picked up did not have prices on the item or the shelf. We ended up using our phones to try to look the prices up. We selected three items and went to the checkout. The first item they rang up did not match the price that we had seen online and another had no price at all. The process for them to look up the price of the item took about 5 minutes. The "front end lead" came over and was not able to find it until a third employee stepped in to find the price. Meanwhile my wife came up to the register and placed her hand on the counter. She exclaimed "ewww, there is something sticky on the counter." The front end lead's response was to snap at her that someone had sat down a drink there "it's just water." He did not even say sorry about that. The mess was sticky, water is not sticky. If it was a drink that got sat down then it rehydrated some previous mess that had not been properly cleaned. Furthermore, if the employees knew a mess was there why would they not clean it up? There was even a 4th employee nearby just standing around (an older heavy-set gentleman) who appeared to be a manager and never stepped in during any of this. We ended up purchasing two of three items but honestly I regret doing so. The entire experience...
Read moreDick’s continues to disappoint. In a store that previously dedicated half its floor space to camping, hunting, fishing and hiking, one can now not even find a pair of hiking socks on the sales floor. The flashy name brand merchandise that was on the floor was priced as usual such that only those willing to go into debt for the prestige could possibly have afforded it. Ashley saved the day by going out the back door, in the rain, to a trailer where some hiking socks were kept, as she was told, because they were “out of season”. In May. Dick’s should thank its lucky stars that Academy Sports has not yet come to town and fear the day it does, because I can’t see how this endures when any alternative exists. The one star is because it’s the lowest I can give. The second star is only for Ashley, who made the trip not a complete...
