Growing up, I wish card shops were like We TheHobby. My son and I collect and occasionally sell cards online, so when we first went to We the Hobby it was a pretty incredible experience. The overall selection of sports cards is pretty vast and can be expensive at times, but that is what the hobby has become. There are however, opportunities to grab a pack or two and sit down and enjoy the shop. Every time we go there, this has been the case. The employees in the shop are more than kind and knowledgeable about what they’re selling especially when kids arrive. My son has the best luck just like any kids do at that age and has created some pretty awesome memories while he’s been there. His first trip to the shop he pulled a pretty rare Pokémon card and was invited into the studio to show it off. As a father, I cannot tell you how much that means when it comes to creating positive memories while participating in the hobby. A few months later, we ended up getting into a break And pulled a Josh Allen RPA./49. Both of my kids had to buy a pack of Pokémon cards and again my son hit another big card. Expectation is that you can’t do that three times in a row, but sometimes our kids don’t meet expectations. We’ve been back twice since and every time hit an auto, or something he would consider cool. But the absolute best part of the shop are the people that work there. We’ve seen them out a card shows and my son loves going up in saying hello because of how they treat him in the shop. This place truly understands what the hobby is and can support whatever level of collecting you may be interested in. We are really fortunate to have a place like this in the city...
Read moreI recently returned to sports card hobby last summer after being away from it for over 30 years. Hearing that we had a place like We The Hobby in our small city was very exciting so my wife and I decided to stop in one Sunday after church.
The fact that this store is on such a small street in the art district of the city seems fitting. You'll drive right by it thinking you're just on a normal residential street if you're not careful. The store itself is absolutely stunning and laid out well. We were given a tour and shown all of the high-end product available and watched a live break taking place in the studio. I bought a hobby box of Topps Heritage. I think the owners did a great job on the visuals of the store but missed a huge opportunity to connect with collectors in the Rochester card community.
Rochester is a blue collar town with a lot of 'old money' and the average hobbyists won't be able to identify with the business model of WTH's breaking first approach. The decision to not sell singles (which I get it) just alienates a core group of collectors from being able to be a part of this great store. However, I get the feeling that this was intentionl based on breaking being the core product and high-end boxes/cases being front and center.
While WTH is an amazing store, I personally feel like they missed an opportunity to be Western NY's version of stores like Cards HQ and The Card Vault. Again, maybe this was intention and that's understandable. If you're into breaking, this is definitely the place for you... if singles and dollar boxes are your thing, you may be...
Read moreI can’t tell you the last time I went somewhere and the staff’s customer service was as pleasant as this. Just started collecting cards with my little brother because i find it a great way to bring us closer and spend more time together. But since I was younger things have changed, Topps alone has so many different series of packs when before it was either Topps , upper deck , bowman etc.. so I felt kind of out of place. To be able to talk to someone with such knowledge and genuine passion, happily answering questions to pass on what they know not just trying to push a sale for something is rare In this day and age. As someone who prides them selfs with the same characteristics in my family business, I truly appreciated that. Not only was the service amazing, we pulled over 6x the amount of special cards that the box said you had a chance to get . It was also one of the cheapest boxes available. Which makes me excited to see what the top tier ones will have . I will never go anywhere else but this place! the joy of opening a pack with my brother and every 5 seconds going crazy over what card we pulled exceeded the amount the cards were worth which was well over what I paid for them. It’s more than just trading cards when you go here it’s an experience all on its Own and I can’t wait till the next...
