While there are many good things about MC, I have disliked many aspects of my experience while living on campus. The educational experience is quite good, despite a lack of diverse opinions. The teachers are understanding, very communicative, and they keep their classes small and concentrated. However, if you want to double major you should not attend. A friend of mine was told that even though she had fulfilled all of the course requirements for a double major in psychology and literature, she could not have a diploma for both or even any document stating that she fulfilled all course requirements for a second major. Instead they said that the only way to earn two degrees was to go and complete her core classes over again. The judicial system at the college is unbalanced, dogmatic, and very impersonal. It almost seems that the school relies on students to be caught so they can collect fines. The campus security is dishonest and will give parking tickets for nothing. They will not even notify you if you get one, so if you're parked in the wrong place on accident they will wait for a few hours and write another ticket. This will continue indefinitely if you let it. The dining is sub-par in most respects and the cafeteria workers are very unprofessional. My girlfriend has been hit on and had inappropriate comments directed toward her by cafeteria staff on multiple occasions. The administration is very controlling of most aspects of the student body. As it stands a meeting of more than 15 individuals is technically not allowed without administrative approval. In addition the office of residence life has fines for just about everything in the dorms which, in some cases, are very unfairly enforced. Not to mention visitation policies are very restrictive and staffing for visitation hours is unreliable, which means that the already short hours can be cancelled at any time because of residence life's inability to properly manage their staff. The school also shows a disturbing lack of diverse clubs. Instead all clubs are either religious or politically conservative in nature. In addition if you want to escape the various pitfall of living off campus then you're out of luck. Your scholarships will be taken away if you move off campus unless you are commuting from home. An exception was recently made for seniors. In short, if you expect to be able to branch out and learn beliefs other than strict right wing Christianity or if you want to have the ability to make any of your own life-choices, do not attend Mississippi College. You will be babysat...
Read moreI wish I could say I was proud of where I graduated, but years after the fact, I can't. It wasn't for lack of involvement--I was heavily involved in several student organizations, worked on campus in Residence Life, and academically excelled every year of my experience. I was well-liked and popular with students, faculty, and staff alike. My experience itself was golden. However, the college has morphed into something I can't in good faith promote to others.
Mississippi College values image over all else. Don't be deceived--the values it purports to uphold mean nothing to its administration. "Integrity" and "respect" are vain buzzwords. In reality, they mean nothing when it comes to the student body and faculty. Pursuing knowledge and truth only matters when those versions match MC's narrative. And to civilly disagree with or share opinions against this narrative means excommunication from its community and losing your livelihood. MC has loudly and proudly shown what it truly values: conformity, silence, and compliance.
Don't misunderstand me. There are wonderful, kind, Christ-centered people at this institution. They model critical thinking, analysis of ideas, and civil discourse to their students. But if you're looking for a college where you, too, get to grow and become a part of that community, this is not the...
Read moreI have a really bad experience in MC. But not because of the people here. It’s because of how school treats international students. I’m a student from Taiwan and today is my last day in school, but before I’m going to pick up my certification, I got informed that I need to pay around 2000 dollars for second session or I will not get my official documents. I was super shocked, because I already paid almost 8000 in the first beginning and no one said we need to pay two sessions. All of the students in my class have no idea about this. I feel so bad. How can they ask international students to pay such a big fee in the last minute?! And I just closed my America account yesterday because I’m going back to my country. They really bring me a big inconvenience. I really don’t recommend international students to study IEP program here. If any international students have any questions, just leave the message down here. I would like to tell you more details why I don’t recommend...
