TLDR: A decent store for the average gamer, neat for collectors to see hard to find games, terrible place to buy rarer games, may as well be the DKOldies of Colorado when it comes to rarer games. Customer service is mixed.
I had to think long and hard about my experience here before I could post a review. Overall, this store is worth stopping by. Prices under or slightly over the three digit value seem to be fairly close to market value. But the "rare" titles are sort of up in the air. Some of the asking prices were double, even triple the average market value. Asking 900$ for something like Rule of Rose when the average value was 700$ (now 600$). Is kinda crazy to me. But none the less the store holds the right to ask whatever they want for something. But when the store actively hides more expensive games because of "the reviews people leave about us". It's kinda hard to ignore the shady feeling some of their prices give off.
Now, while reading reviews of this place, I noticed an argument the owner tried to use was "guaranteed 100% authentic" when explaining why prices were set the way they were. I could understand that argument for a good chunk of the retro titles, especially cartridges. But disks are another story. I know it's gotten easier for people to recreate CD/DVD disks. Systems like the Sega CD don't even need a modded system to run reproductions. But systems like the Gamecube aren't easy to replicate. So when you walk into this store and see a game with an asking price of 250$, and said game is averaged at 80$ (keep in mind this is a Gamecube game im talking about). I can understand why this store gets as much hate as it does.
The final thing I want to bring up is customer service.... It was sort of a mixed bag. Two employees were working that night. One of them was very pleasant, helping me out every step of the way. Letting me take a deep look at everything I was interested in, answering every question I had if he could answer, and engaging in pleasant banter while I was examining the games I was interested in. The other one, however, was the mixed bag. I didn't have much interaction with him untill I had finished my purchase. It was after I was done that we really started talking. At times, he was standoffish. Other times, he was trying to help me find a game I was looking for. It wasn't untill I got in the car, my wife had told me that while they were in the store, my son had asked the price of a card. The mixed employee told him to look up the price on Price Charting. Now, it's not a bad response on paper. But my wife said it was all in the tone and body language. Very standoffish and bothered by an 8 year old asking a simple question about a card. An 8 year old mind you who has no idea what Price Charting even is or how to look up a card in the first place.
Overall, this place isn't as awful as some of the other reviews make it out to be. But this place isn't as amazing as other reviews make it out to be either. It truly is a mid level store with an owner who could learn a thing or two from other stores in Colorado. It has the potential to be a wonderful store, that I would gladly make the hour+ drive to visit more often. But as it stands now, it's worth a visit, maybe once a...
Read moreHate to leave this review on a small business but after reading the recent 1 star reviews, seeing the owners replies to them being so unprofessional, as well as what my experience in shop was… I felt the need to. Most small business are all about the community, considering that’s who keeps coming back, and the owner was very disrespectful just over all considering this wasn’t my bf first time in store. For back story this was my personal first experience, my boyfriend has been coming here about 3-4 weeks occasionally for Xbox 360 supplies. Now he bought these items and games from this store, with the games at 15-25$ each. Over phone we were given an estimate of 50% in store credit - we wanted to trade towards a different console they had (OLED switch). When walking in you could see the frustration on the owners face that we showed up 10 mins before closing, owner didn’t say a single word. He started going through the items and noticed 2 games were missing from their case, honest mistake but he seemed visibly frustrated for some reason. We have a baby and I’m currently pregnant, people are human. He put everything down and just walked away… never said anything again after that comment…. The employee proceeded to test the controller and console- which he was SMASHING the buttons like he was purposely trying to get the joy-cons to start lagging. When everything was “working fine” he didn’t even converse with the owner, just looked at us and said 50$… baffled we asked.. for everything or just the console? He said “idk that’s just what he told me..” my bf “well why is that? So 25$ for the console and what? 5$ per each game? You said 50% in store credit” he proceeds to continue to remind us no matter what elaboration we’re asking for his reply would be “that’s just what he said, idk” while the owner just… wanders around pretending to “close shop” employee just keeps shrugging and pointing at him… We had a 360 elite in GREAT condition- no dings or scratches, controller- was bought from this store, power cable- bought from the store, and some great classic games like midnight club 3, all assassin creeds, even a ps4 anthem game. We had more we wanted to try and trade but after the disrespect we received with those items… eBay and Facebook market would be way more beneficial. A complete scam by them considering it was THEIR ITEMS, we wouldn’t have minded getting 50% ripped off, I get having to make profit, But this was just beyond that. This seems more like scamming, was just the worst experience I’ve ever had with a gaming community. Like I said in the beginning, after reading the reviews and meeting the owner personally…. I see what everyone’s talking about. Also doesn’t seem to care about the impression he’s leaving on his community, he could have a lot of returning happy customers but would rather be stuck up and stand-offish.
even worse to see his reply. Apparently Harry Potter deathly hallow, fifa 15 for Xbox 1, anthem, midnight club 3, forza (came back and do have the disc) red dead redemption AND halo 4-5 are bargain bin games. Considering 3-4 I didn’t even get from his store. It was an Offending offer to offer 10$ for these...
Read moreBefore I begin with my review, I believe that an essential part of this would be to mention that I have extreme social anxiety. I have pulled muscles just by talking to people that I don't know (this has happened at others stores that I have visited). That being said, this is my review of Midnight Games.
Upon walking in, I was greeted by Josh. He made me feel extremely welcome, and for once in my life I was comfortable in an area that I would normally be extremely anxious. He explained to me how this shop came to be as well as giving me a tour of the building and what it meant to him. Shortly after meeting Josh, his business partner Bird came in. I can honestly say that these two gentlemen value and appreciate their customers. Bird is extremely knowledgeable in nostalgic video games and Josh is very knowledgeable when it comes to magic the gathering. Their game room for magic the gathering as well as other games is very clean and comforting. I enjoyed multiple games of magic tonight here and would recommend this store for anyone searching for a place to play any game in a comfortable, welcoming environment.
I would also like to add that I have been to three other stores to play magic before I arrived at Midnight Games, and this store has been the most comfortable, caring environment that I have had the joy...
