I was at Norman’s Western in Cut Bank, Montana, just trying to buy some camping chairs. Nothing complicated. I wasn’t looking for help, just shopping and minding my business. Then a man in a Trump hat came over, uninvited, to “help” me. Let me be clear—when I see that red hat, it doesn’t read as patriotism. It doesn’t mean help. It reminds me of the KKK. You might as well put on a white hood. Because when you support the same hateful rhetoric, when you stand behind policies rooted in racism and cruelty, your actions are no different.
Cut Bank hasn’t changed. In fact, it’s gotten worse. The racism is thicker than ever, just a little more smug now—out in the open, like they’re proud of it. People around here still look at Natives like we don’t belong on land that was ours to begin with. You can feel the judgment in their stares, in the tone of their voices, and in little moments like this—where a hat says everything they don’t have the guts to say out loud. But we hear it loud and clear.
Places like Norman’s might seem like just another local store, but they’re part of a town that’s still stuck in the past—one that clings to white supremacy, bigotry, and small-minded pride like it’s a badge of honor. It’s exhausting. It’s infuriating. And it’s dangerous.
I’ve survived too much to stay quiet. That man’s presence, and that hat on his head, was a reminder that racism here isn’t subtle—it’s accepted. Encouraged. Celebrated. Don’t be fooled by the friendly faces. This is the kind of place where they smile at you while holding the door, and still vote for the man who would’ve locked your whole family in cages.
Cut Bank hasn’t changed. It’s just taken...
