This review is long overdue.
Last year (2015), we found Skip and Spiritcraft Furniture online and began a lengthy email chain based on our needs for a large slab (walnut) table. I had communicated with a few local makers as well as a Canadian firm. The cost of the other companies were at least twice that of Spiritcraft. We were getting close to Thanksgiving and my wife and I were hosting for the 1st time. To add to the degree of difficulty, we had a welder close by who was going to fabricate the legs.....so now you all know the facts.
Skip never missed a beat. He was responsive to every question and never flinched, even when I asked him to communicate with the welder on details. Our slab came 2 days before Thanksgiving. I had secretly told myself we wouldn't get it in time as I had lagged on needed information a few times. The shipping crate and interior protection were perfect, with nothing even close to a scratch evident. The table and legs were married on site in less than 45 minutes, thanks to Skip telling us beforehand what we needed as far as fasteners/bolts and washers.
Thanksgiving was a blast and the table blew my father in-law away... (which was worth every penny in the big picture as he is an accomplished wood worker). I should have told him I made it.
I have always been a little skeptical ordering things online when shipping and custom fabrication are in the equation. This was by far the most professional transaction I have ever been been involved with. Every time we have a dinner or BBQ, people ask who made the table and we say "Some guy in Illinois named Skip...The guy is the...
Read moreI hate to write bad reviews, but I had a terrible experience with SpiritCraft Furniture. I ordered an expensive custom wood table top from them. I was promised an “heirloom quality” piece delivered in 3 weeks. I finally received the item after 8 weeks, and it arrived damaged and had a number of construction defects. There was a clearly visible glue joint running down the middle of the table top, one corner had a 5” split, another corner was deeply gouged in a number of places, the surface was bowed 1/4” across the width, and the overall finish was a rough and dull. It was certainly no “heirloom” piece of furniture, but rather a very average one. Regardless, it’s wood and wood can be repaired. I contacted SpiritCraft and initially was told they would make things right and cover the cost of these very necessary repairs. I hired a local expert with many, many years of experience and his evaluation was the same as mine: the table top was poorly made. He gave me an estimate to fix everything to heirloom quality and I forwarded this to SpiritCraft. An unpleasant woman named Mal called me to aggressively defend the “quality” of their work and further said she would not pay anything. She lied and stated that all the problems were “shipping damage” and it was my obligation as the buyer to file a claim with the shipper they used. SpiritCraft would take no responsibility for the quality of the product they delivered. She ended the conversation by rudely hanging up on me. I guess this is the kind of customer service you can expect from SpiritCraft Furniture if you have a problem with your order. I would avoid...
Read moreIt has been over a year since my wife and I walked into Spiritcraft and fell in love with an unfinished, 2 inch thick slice of a tree that was leaning against a wall. While it is common for Spiritcraft to join two pieces of wood for more table width, this single piece was the perfect size for a dining table in our home.
We were very pleased to be able to purchase this beautiful piece of Black Walnut without alteration and welcomed the owner’s (Skip) help in designing a tongue & groove, Walnut and Cherry base to support the table. After spending time in Spirtcraft’s kiln our Black Walnut piece was finished, delivered to our home and assembled in perfect condition.
Subsequently, we ordered Amish-made Cherry and Black Walnut chairs for one side of the table that are manufactured off-site but are sold through Spiritcraft, and we returned a third time and worked with Skip in designing and having him build a Cherry and Black Walnut bench for the other side of the table.
All of our interactions with Skip, his family, and the talent at Spiritcraft were most enjoyable. It is a treat to step inside of Spiritcraft and see the natural variety and beauty of raw wood from many different tree species.
We feel that we received great value from Spiritcraft in that we purchased beautiful furniture, with life-long durability, at very reasonable prices. Pricing was well explained in advance and timelines for the kiln drying process, manufacturing, and delivery were all...
