Update 3/2023: I initially gave this spot 5 stars, but after seeing how the kitchen operates, I'm hesitant to believe the people there are qualified or certified to work in a kitchen. Will be reporting then to the health department to make sure they don't get anyone sick. No kitchen certifications are even visible and the people are touching everything with their gloves and then food items. Employees taste food in front of customers with their hands and even noticed flies land on a plate of food while employee handled money with her gloves on. They need kitchen training.
Great little market offering a variety of the normal grocery store items as well as a great assortment of Mexican products. If you have ever been to any of the other Junior's and enjoy what they have, you will love this place. It has a small cafe with fresh pan dulce as well as other fresh assorted pastries. They also have a breakfast and lunch counter with a small seating area if you choose to dine in. Their meat assortment is on point at this location as usual, and upon opening, (Feb 2023), they seem to have the cheapest fajitas in town at $4.99 & $5.99 a lb. They also have a small deli section with an assortment of South American cremas and deli meats. The produce section is small, but carries a good variety of products and is neatly organized.
This new little market is a welcome addition to the area and will be great when wanting to skip the hustle and bustle of Walmart/HEB and especially when in need of Mexican items. Will update when I try the tacos...
Read moreToday I went to Junior's Fresh Market to find something for lunch. They sell tacos and plates of various guisos. Of course, there is the supermarket and a café (which sells pizza), but today's review is limited to my experience with the tacos.
I chose tacos of carne guisada. I was offered a choice of flour or corn tortillas. I prefer corn, but the tortillas are smaller than the flour ones. So I ordered three tacos. It turns out, since the corn tortillas are smaller (and the same price as flour) they compensate by using two corn tortillas side by side as one taco. I wish I had known that, because two would have been more than enough.
They wrap the tacos individually in foil, and offer the salsa of your choice added in small plastic lidded cups.
As they assemble the tacos, they drain the broth from the guiso. I'm guessing the broth is where most of the flavor is, as the meat, while very tender, did not have much flavor. Thank God for the salsa which made up for that.
I enjoyed the tacos, but three was too much for me.
I also had some delicious fresh squeeze limeade (limonada).
Next time I will probably get the plate, because the tortillas got soggy fast as tacos.
Overall I enjoyed it and think you will too. Their prices are reasonable, and the service...
Read moreAgree 100% with Roy Rodriguez’s review.. I went by one morning to try the food, went back the following evening and you could clearly see that some of the food was the same from the day before. Especially the chicharron it looked dry and old. So I turned and decided to go to Juniors on Monte Cristo where they know how to run a kitchen.. the store is beautiful and so clean I was amazed when I walked in for the first time.. everything so organized.. But the kitchen is going to get someone sick or worse.. would not recommend eating there. For your own safety please stay away till the kitchen is properly trained...
