I went to the University Drafthouse House with my son and long time friend Eddy Cavazos. The place is just east of McColl Rd. In Edinburg. Walking in I immediately noticed the all the big screens located inside, perfect for watching any sporting event. Since it was such a nice day we decided to sit outside. Our server took our drink and appetizer order, we ordered the Calamari and fried Mushrooms to start with. Our server brought our teas and shortly after our appetizers. The Calamari was cooked perfectly, it was served coated with a sweet chili sauce. The Mushrooms were also prepared on point, dusted with parmesan cheese, and served with a traditional ranch dressing. I really liked that they were good sized mushrooms, however, a nice marinara to dip into would have really taken them over the top. My son ordered the burger 101 a basic burger, he likes it plain and dry, comes with fries, he really enjoyed it. I ordered the Greek lamb burger with a side of onion rings. The burger comes with tzatziki sauce, feta, red onions, and arugula. The menu stated it comes with roasted tomatoes, but as you can see in the photo there were none present. Also, there was very little feta, but my server brought more upon request. I was disappointed that the pattie itself was dry I was hoping for a juicy concoction, and it could have used some salt to enhance the flavor. I do have to say, those were the best battered onion rings I've had in a long time. My only real complaint was the food was not as hot as I like, my guess is it sat in the pick up window to long due to the lull between appetizers plates being picked up to burgers being served. Eddy ordered the fried Shrimp appetizer for his meal. They were large shrimp served atop slaw and jicama slices. He gave me one, outstanding!! Light batter, crispy real good. Lastly we ordered the brownie to share, served warm with fresh berries, chocolate sauce, and ice cream. The menu stated it would be served with candied pecans, Again, NO PECANS!! Eddy commented Walnuts in the brownies would have been nice, I told him the Pecans would have done the texture effect it needed had they been served. Overall I give them a single thumbs up and deduct stars because of the flies that started pestering us so bad that we had to change tables, and the missing menu items. I do recommend you give them a try, I'll be going back for the O- rings, plus I'll be reviewing the new location in McAllen soon.

7/3/24 - we decided to try their “Happy Hour” and dinner menu. The drinks were good as usual along with the fried mushrooms. No major complaints on the food except for my “Mr. Freshman” fish sandwich. When this sandwich came to the table you could smell nothing but the fish, which meant it was not fresh. The beer batter was a little greasy, ate most of the fish without the batter. If we return, I will not try any fish dishes, due to not knowing the freshness of them. 6/2024 - It has been a while since we have been back, but had brunch today. The food was delicious along with our cocktails. Our waiter was good and attentive. Only thing is when a waiter comes and tells you what the bill is without showing it to you. However, when I asked to see the bill, he willingly showed it to me and walked off to give me some privacy, which was very appreciative. A great place to eat! We also ordered appetizers; fried pickles (breaded with Panko, red chili flakes, chives and lightly drizzled with Parmesan cheese. We ordered some amazing jalapeño poppers, the jalapeño were roasted and skinned, had a similar outside batter, it was stuffed with a delicious combination of cream cheese, San Manuel chorizo, and pieces of crispy bacon. The menu had a number of hamburgers. They have from regular to very interesting choices. We had “Teacher’s Pet” it had peach, bacon, Brie cheese and jalapeño jam. Our other choice was “The Graduate” which had mushrooms, Gouda cheese, caramelized onions and truffle aioli. Our hamburgers came with skinny fries and we substituted the other fries for beer batter onion rings. The onion rings were not bad, but not fond of the big puffy beer batter. Overall a great meal, excellent service! We visited another time, and it was not a disappointment! Great brunch menu. It won’t let me leave a new review, so had to edit the one I previously wrote. I ordered a Santa Fe chicken, not sure of exact name but it was fantastic! I normally don’t eat chilaquiles but this reminded me of this type of dish. It had a thin layer of refried beans then topped with crunchy corn tortilla strips covered in a red sauce, a little sweet from the tomatoes. It was topped with queso fresco, crema and an egg made to your order. It had a moist grilled chicken on the side. My husband had chicken and waffles topped with fruit and their homemade syrup. I can’t wait to order brunch again.

I’ve generally enjoyed the food here, although I’ve noticed a drop in quality recently—especially in the margaritas, which now taste syrupy instead of fresh like they used to. However, my main issue lies with the management and how ownership handles customer service. It seems they’ve become less accommodating over time. In the past, you could substitute fries for a salad when ordering a cheeseburger, but that policy has changed. I wasn’t aware of this, so when I ordered my meal and realized the mistake, I brought it to the attention of the staff. I was told that substitutions now come with an additional charge, which is fine in theory, but here’s where it gets shady: Instead of just charging me a small fee to swap fries for a salad, they charged me full price for the salad and gave me no fries. Essentially, I paid for a side salad as if it were a separate item but got nothing in place of the fries that should’ve come with my meal. When I pointed this out, management refused to serve me the fries because I had “substituted” them, according to the fine print on the menu. Had I known this was the case, I would’ve ordered both the fries and the salad, since I didn’t really “substitute” anything at all—I was just charged extra for less food. When I asked if they could fix the situation, I was told that this is the owner’s policy, and there was nothing they could do. This isn’t the first time my friends and I have had issues like this at the restaurant, but I’ve always given it the benefit of the doubt because I enjoy the food and atmosphere. That said, the way they handle these petty, unclear policies is frustrating. As much as I like their cheeseburgers, I’d rather make my own at home than deal with this kind of nickel-and-diming. Edit: I appreciate your generically modified apology however it doesn’t make up for the fact that you ripping customers off for substituting fries on the menu. Hopefully somebody finds this review useful.

University is usually one of my weekend go-to restaurants but after my poor experience with their manager last weekend my view point has changed. The food is always tasty and the service is usually great too! I always get takeout and have never previously had an issue. Last weekend I placed my takeout order ahead of the kitchen closing (11:00 pm) and for the one of the first times I didn’t pay ahead (which seems could have also been related). It was an order of two burgers and an appetizer. When I came to pick up my order I was informed by a member of Managment that my order had been “thrown away” because it “looked unfit to be eaten” since I had ordered “2 hours” ago. It had not been 2 hours since the order was placed... I showed the manager the time log from when I ordered and called and I kept being told the kitchen was already closed and there was nothing that could be done. I found this highly unprofessional. I was told I had been contacted and had not answered the phone and that was also part of the reasoning. Please keep in mind the call was made while I was driving to the location so I had not seen it. I have never had an issue picking up my order after 11:00 as I am typically charged up front by the bar rather than at the kitchen if the payment is not done via phone. The location is open until 1:00am and I arrived within that time frame. The attitude of the manager seemed very unempathetic and not the response I was expecting after the miss on their end. I believe if I had paid ahead of time or that if the payment was requested over the phone, the “quality/appearance” of the food wouldn’t have mattered and I would have been given the order anyway as they would have already gotten their pay. University needs to have a better way of handling phone orders since they recently stopped using DoorDash. If a customer places and order and shows up within the time frame that your location is open, they should be provided the order and not given an excuse making it seem as if it’s the...
