There's a lot to be said about this center. When I first arrived, I had my expectations low for what to expect. I'd read the reddit reviews of job corps as a whole and then the very few of David l Carrasco. The food ranges from the same meals almost every 2 weeks and then a surprise meal every once and while. Red card holders get the chance to adjust the menu but even that is limited due to budget and what they want their students to eat. The dorms are in good living condition except for the rooms with roaches and water bugs. Certain sections have tv's in their rooms when others do not. The center as a whole seems to favor the boys more than the girls. The boys get to leave their rooms later with no consequence when the girls are out of the rooms on time. There are grown men roaming around this center praying on the younger underage girls. Staff who call students drug addicts just because they asked for an ibuprofen and drag their feet to give them the medication. The RA's are nice for the most part. Ms. Juarez and Ms. Reyes being the best of them in my opinion. The instructors for each trade all have their one ways of teaching, some being flawed and others being influential. Work base internships range from actually interning for your trade to doing something that has nothing to do with it. HVAC being one of them that's hard to get an internship in the actual trade. Some trades are favored over others, more supplies etc. If you're going to be attending this center, I recommend welding or facility maintenance as a trade. The instructors are good at their jobs in helping you understand the basics and even go a bit further. If you are an adult heading to this center, DON'T GET INVOLVED IN DRAMA! I cannot stress that enough. Some students thrive on it and by that I mean both young and adult. If you are a parent seeking to send their child there, I vocalize my concern for the drama and the environment of older boys preying on them. The best things I had experienced at this center was the treatment of my RA's, the teaching of Mr. Alvarez, the friends I made, and the experience as a whole. There is bad at this center but there is also good if you don't walk in...
Read moreIf you're poor broke homeless and don't even have your high school diploma you can probably go.
This is a side step to high school not something you do after high school, You can get your GED and that's the really the only thing they care about. Depending on your own intelligence. But, depending on how old you are, you're not getting anything else. Unless you're a fan of Filling people's Emails with questions to do something.
You CAN get your driver's license. Only if you're 50% done with your trade.(They don't tell you when you're at that mark or how to figure that out yourself.)
The other students who I was learning with mostly came from Mexico or New Mexico.. which means that half the damn place wasn't't speaking English.
The Dorms are about as bad as everything else . As this place IS REALLY OLD and they refuse to remodel, in the two dorm rooms I've been in they are slowly replacing the whole room one at a time so if you come here in a few years they probably won't be done yet. I found mold growing in the Ac unit. My closet's back wood pieces were stapled on, and falling off. The Desk they gave us wasn't even fully constructed, I had to finish the dang thing. The boiler is not up to code, from what I hear from HVAC and it desperately needs replacements as the water temperatures continues to drop biweekly, and it even fully Broke. To the point they sent us to the Gary job corps for a weekend. And just quick fixed it.
The food is passable better than most school lunches sometimes, though the fact that less than an hour away is a Jack in the box also helps.
I've made this review too long. Just don't go here, go elsewhere. San Antonio is just a...
Read moreI am highly disappointed and frustrated with the David L. Carrasco Job Corps facility. Myself and Dalton Bluejay Hastings have been trying to retrieve his records from this particular office over the period of the last few days. Mr. Dalton Bluejay Hastings only needs his hours he attended for the United States Army so he can join the service. Somehow however, the director, assistant director, records, and Mrs. Rodriguez, a career counselor have been giving us the run around. This Job Corp facility claimed to not have Mr. Dalton Bluejay Hastings in the system even though he attended their facility from January to May of 2013. Now after making a few phone calls myself, i was able to find out that Mr. Dalton Bluejay Hastings was indeed in the system from this facilities security personnel, in particular, Officer Ramos. I relayed this information to my son-in-law, Mr. Dalton Bluejay Hastings so he could call this facility in El Paso. Time after time we both have been smoke screened by the David L. Carrasco Job Corps facility by its personnel. What i find ridiculous is the fact that the employees who are supposed to know where and how to find this information can not even do their assigned jobs. Also, this facilities operator automatically transfers you to security instead of to the specific person you are asking to be transferred to. I will be filing a complaint, I will be speaking with the better business bureau, and Mr. Dalton Bluejay Hastings is also considering legal action since his information was not supposed to...
