I finally shelled out the requisite tokens for a new X2 without ludicrous at the beginning of July. Living on a small hilly island in Puget Sound popular with bikers i discovered a wealth of developing trails in the woods. Ideal! Having seen the explosion in Electric Bike tech in Europe i purchased a 2014 Haibike All MTN SDuro in Europe and stuck it inside a shipping container containing 5 triumph spitfires. Who would want to import six volt hell is beyond me! (Im English so i can trash English sports cars with impunity!) That bike is/was astounding. The Yamaha motor with Cadence sensor makes for a silky ride with more than enough power to cope with anything vertical ive set it against in the state. BUT, i am also blessed with local access to the Port Gamble MTB Playground and its big and fun to explore. After seeing a bunch of folk of certain years using Lunas of various iterations i had a go and was immediately startled by the slightly unpredictable PAS system. After the Haibike i had to re learn anticipating gears in a timely manner and in a timing sequence quite different to the Haibike. Once mastered its natural enough if you remember to always be on top of the correct gear selection. I did test this on the road and it certainly has enough speed to get you quickly between trails. Would i ride it round Belgium on a cycling vacation? hell no! Would i ride it anywhere with a slope in WA hell yes! Standard x2 is enough for most people unless you really want to be at the front of the uphill pack or simply like the top end.
Components for the price are good. I just hope that when/if something go's pear shaped on the electrics there is enough support from Luna to enable a moron like me to navigate the repair. Quite frankly one of the best things about the bike is the fact that it is a bit of a "Wolf in sheeps clothing" I think we all secretly like the idea of knowing that ones bike can go a lot faster up hill than the spandex wearing gronk who nearly took you out riding the wrong way up a one way trail. The seat is an excersise in ass torture! it sucks and the Dropper post control button is flimsy and feels cheap as hell. Compared the the Haibike Yamaha motor it is noisy as it emits a high pitched electrical whine while the Yam is more akin to a regular bike sound. However i reckon that helps give the bears a bit of a heads up! Paint job looks cool new and really dances in the Sun!
I got this bike as a powerfull add on to my stable for several main reasons: It doesnt look like a lot of the throttle emtbs out there its more like an analog bike but the power is there if you need it. I nearly went down the surron route but when you take the time to actually figure out where you can ride them off road without pissing off the folks with goatees and granola stuck to their tshirts you end up with not much choice. The Lunatic on the other hand allows secret yobbishness in the woods when no one is looking and a sensible well presented emtb when the granolas are on the trail! I love it and hope it continues to extract the inner 16 year old spotty motorbecane 50cc moped wheelie person i really am deep down.
Thank you Luna for giving me an extra tool for fun on...
Read moreOver the past weekend I did the craziest thing and bought my son a talaria XXX ebike for his 16th birthday basically sweet 16. Scott was definitely amazing from lunacycle made the process completely smooth. I did purchase the bike on a Wednesday, and then the bike was ready by Friday for pickup! Also as a side note when I did purchase the bike online and chose in store pickup I was able to send an email with a quick response letting us know that the bike should be ready once we drove down which was nice. So We did drive down from San Jose to go to the shop itself to pick up because I also wanted the bike to be put together by professionals. They Do offer an additional charge for shipping if you are not local I figured 6 hours of a drive wasn't too bad to see this thing in person. Also my son wasn't going to wait for the shipping. when the bike is shipped you have to put it together which even though there's plenty of videos my son told me that helps you with installation, I wanted to make sure it was done right the first time and made well. Also for an extra 90 bucks to put a bike together professionally was such a great deal! I also loved The vibes of the shop it was super chill. Lunacycle went above and beyond to get my son set up and even helped us load the bike into the car. We did have a little issue Friday night with the brakes so did have to return Saturday to see if there was anything they could do. Unfortunately they could not service it or have it ready until next week. But since we were only visiting for the weekend they still went above and beyond to help us out to get us the pieces we needed before we left to go home. Definitely a really nice bike shop I'm super happy with my purchase and my son has definitely been riding it every chance he can get. For parents that are thinking about purchasing this bike need to know that this bike is no joke and definitely is not a toy, but it is a great learner for someone who wants to possibly ride a motorcycle as an adult or is looking to purchase a motorcycle going forward. Definitely do your research. My son has been doing his research since he was 14 when he first heard about the bike itself. But truly a great and fun ride! Thank you so much to Scott and rest of the team for everything that they do I can't wait to see what the future holds with us...
Read moreToward the end of August 2024 I purchased a new Luna 2.5X Enduro E-assist mountain bike. I had been keeping an eye on the Luna website to see when this bike would be available. As soon as they sent me the email that they were in stock, I placed my order. I received my shipment in less than one week. The assembly was easy and it only took about 20 minutes to mount the handlebar and the front wheel. It probably took longer to put all the packing material aside than it took to do the assembly. It was well packed. I really like the smart charger supplied with the bike. Both the rate of charge and the percentage of charge are adjustable. This is very handy. I keep the battery charged at about 80%, then bring it up to full charge before taking long rides. This is not my first E-assist bike. I have been riding my Haibike with the Bosch CX drive since 2018. After riding it over 18,000 miles, I only had two minor regrets about it. One is that it is a hardtail. I wished that I had opted for a full suspension model. Two is that it is speed limited to 20 mph for E-assist. The Luna X2.5 solves both of these issues. Even at low levels of assist on the Luna, I can peddle right past 20 and feel the power up to 30 mph and beyond. It feels great to keep feeling that power. I had a couple minor issues and some questions as i was getting used to the new Luna. Their support team has been fantastic. All of my questions have been answered in a timely manner. Seb has been particularly helpful. He even made me a personal video in answer to one of my questions. The VESC app is also very interesting and useful to tune the motor to suit my riding style. It puts out all kind of useful information such as how many watts are being feed to the motor, battery level, range estimate, motor temperature, watt hours per mile, and much more! At this point, I have put over 550 very enjoyable miles on the new Luna X2.5. I look forward to several thousand more miles ahead on trails as well as on bike paths. I recommend Luna for your next E-bike. Also, their web site is very complete and helpful with a vast array of great...
