I stood in along line waiting for my turn to pay. The line went pretty fast until it was my turn to pay.
I had the most discriminating experience at the store as a minority Filipino customer shopping in North County Encinitas. I was treated with racism at the register while purchasing decorative pillows, a whole bedding set, and various home decor. The sales associate unzipped every pillow to look inside. She also inspected the inside of the bedding set. Then ask me to move my shopping cart over for her to have full view so she could see the bottom of the cart if anything else was hidden underneath. My time a the register took longer than all the other customers because of all of these inspections.
I was so embarrassed because all the ladies still waiting in line could see how thorough she was inspecting everything - as if I was one of those pulled aside by the TSA.
I also had a TJX credit card and that wasn't enough, she took extra time to exam my drivers License to go along with it.
Then she commented, "I'm sure you don't have any bags so it's 10 cents a bag because you are in Encinitas." I carry recycled bags with me for everything so I thought she was pre-judging me.
I understand that employees should be doing this for security reasons, but if they are going to, they need to be consistent with all customers, and not just those that look like they arent's rich retired white ladies, or of color.
I won't ever go back to this Homegoods again. I feel they are profiling customers that don't fit the demographics. It's unfair. I love Encinitas, but not the employees at this store. The manager needs to talk to employees about discrimination...
Read moreFirst, let me say that I’ve been going to the Encinitas Homegoods since it opened over 20 years ago. I love this store and have supported this store (even through Covid when they were so short handed). Their staff has always been pleasant until today. I went in to make a small return and then to shop and browse like I’ve done hundreds of times. The cashier was a sweet girl and went to go get the manager because I didn’t have a receipt (which has also happened a handful of times). The Homegoods sticker was clearly on the item and there was no damage to the item. The manager who I’ve never seen before, was a short man with long hair and who has ZERO customer service skills. He was rude and nasty, and said he couldn’t except the item back because I didn’t have a receipt. I said this has never happened before but he just walked away. I was stunned. Their policy in the past has been a store credit which is fine because like I mentioned, I shop in this store all the time and spend thousands and thousands of dollars every year. The cashier was so embarrassed and said I’m so sorry over and over again. Needless to say, I left and did not shop nor am I sure I will continue to shop in this store any longer. By the way, the item was only $16.99 so it’s not a big deal but the rudeness and unprofessional demeanor made me sick to my stomach. This store has always been a therapeutic place for me to kill time and it won’t feel the same...
Read moreDo NOT buy any food items at this location. I recently bought a Tahini here (shocked they even sold this item) and took it home to make hummus. I opened the lid in order to remove the film, but saw that it was already opened. I didn't want to eat it because you just never know, so I came back to return it. I came about a week later because I was really busy, but once I did, I explained it to the cashier and her smile completely turned into a straight face and said, "I need to talk to my manager". She did and I heard the manager say something like, "it's not worth it..... Blah blah blah". Cashier came back and gave me a refund (still probably skeptical). First off, I would NEVER return an item I had eaten just for the sake of it. If it was expired or tasted bad, then I'd probably just blame myself, but this was opened and I ended up buying another one at a grocery store. I just felt uncomfortable about the response to my return and will definitely not purchase any food items here, so...
