I came here to get my hair done for my wedding. We traveled very far from a different state, so I was not familiar with any of the salons. I originally called a different salon, but they were busy and said they would call me back. When that salon didn't call me back the next day, I decided to go with Ky's Hair Designs. I was nervous, but she has a lot of good reviews, so I hoped it would be okay.
She is nice and personable enough. However, the first thing she said to me when I sat in her chair was "You have a bad haircut. You want me to cut your hair too?". Like, no?? I'm pretty sure there was a cultural barrier/difference here, and perhaps she didn't realize how rude that comment was, but it still caught me off guard, and it's not something a bride wants to hear hours before she gets married.
So, I told her I wanted beachy waves and showed her a reference photo. Simple enough, no fancy updo or complex braiding, just beachy waves (along with a small hair piece I brought that just needed to be pinned on one side). I initially ended up with Shirley Temple curls, and as she was curling my hair, I tried to reassure myself that it'll be fine, she's experienced, she will separate the curls and make it look better. I ended up having to ASK her to separate the curls, because, at first, she said that I could do it if I wanted to. No, I'm paying YOU to do my hair, why should I have to separate my curls? Anyway, it looked slightly better once the curls were separated, but it was definitely not what I asked for or what I showed her a photo of. Not to mention, she absolutely drenched my hair with hairspray (makin it not only feel, but also look crunchy, stiff, and completely unnatural), took an hour to do it, and she charged OVER $100. I know it's California and I have long hair (only to the top of my chest, nothing outrageously long), but Jesus Christ! My now-husband gave her a tip as well, because he didn't realize at first how much I didn't like it.
I hate confrontation, and we were on a time crunch, so I didn't have the courage or desire to tell Ky directly how it was nothing at all like I wanted, and I hated it. Even if I had, I wouldn't have trusted her to fix it. So she took some photos of us, we paid, smiled and said thank you, and left. Soon after getting into the car, I couldn't help but cry. I know it's a superficial, first-world problem, but how you look on your wedding day affects how you feel, not to mention the photos you will have to remember the day forever. I broke down and thought I would try calling the salon I initially wanted, to see if they could fix it. Luckily, someone answered the phone and said they could get me in. It only took the hairstylist at this other salon 15 minutes to undo Ky's disaster and fix it so it was exactly how I wanted it. She only charged $20 for fixing it, but we gave her $40, and she was super nice, professional, and easy to talk to.
I would give Ky's Hair Designs zero stars if I could - for insulting my hair, taking forever to do a simple style, ignoring what I wanted and doing what she wanted instead, and for robbing us of our money for a horrible job. I also see from some of the other negative reviews that she responds very unkindly to them and may deny that certain things happened, which is completely unprofessional of her, and I wish I'd seen those reviews earlier. My now-husband was with me the entire appointment, so he can vouch for everything said in this review. DO NOT GO TO KY'S HAIR DESIGNS, especially if it's for something special, like...
Read moreI went to Ky's hair design salon back in December 2014 to get my hair colored. I have black hair, and wanted a golden blonde color. After i told her and showed her lots of pictures of what i wanted, she expressed confidence that she could do it. She kept priding about herself and that she has done this for years. I only did the top half of my hair. Basically had chunky blonde highlights added. While this was happening, she had some men walk in for hair cuts. She had them wait while she finished coloring my hair because she was the only worker. I had felt like she rushed to finish me so she could do her walk-ins. When she finished with the highlights i had expected her to put a hair cap on me, but instead she put a plastic walmart bag on my head. Which i thought was really strange. While i waited under the heater for my hair, she cut about 2 mens hair. After her salon was empty, she returned to me to wash my hair. I also had a deep condition. Halfway thru blow drying my hair, she turned off the blow dryer and said we were done (note that there was more walk-ins waiting for hair cuts). When I went to the counter to pay her, i asked what kind of payment she accepted. She then said, "oh u don't have cash?". I did have enough cash on me, but i just wanted to ask if she accepts credit/debit. I ended up paying in cash and left with my hair damp. I was confused if my hair was supposed to be damped and for it to air dry the rest due to the deep condition? Still don't know, but i felt like she was just rushing so she could get to her walk-in customers and don't lose money from them because she did have to send off 1 customer. When I got home and dried my hair, i was not pleased with the outcome. Being the shy person that i am, i called another hair salon to try and make my hair look nicer. They had asked me to go back to Ky because she did the work so she should be the one to fix it. So I called her regarding not being pleased with the outcome and i set up another appointment to go in. At my 2nd visit, i told her that the outcome of my hair just didn't look good, so she recommended i highlight the bottom half of my hair to match the top. So i agreed. She did not end up giving me any discount and just charged me full price.
Overall, if u just want a simple haircut i think she can get the job done. If u want colored hair, as much as she prides herself in her work, she can't walk the talk as the results did not show. She did not make me feel important and top priority (being her ONLY scheduled appointment for the day).
I was a bit disappointed with the overall experience and outcome of my hair. I ended up having a family member redo my hair. Everything i said above is based on my experience...
Read moreHi I wanted to address your response to this particular customer, and investigate her complaint she had. First I would like to say that your practices can be deceiving. I don’t necessarily think they are on purpose. Your website doesn’t say anywhere it’s based on the individual. Your prices and wording on the website doesn’t reflect your service you gave her. Your business website did state that it’s 18.00 for a child under 10 years old. The girl was 8. Whether she had long or short hair it should have been 18.00. No where is it posted on your website, your statement in regards that your price is based on what you do for them. I have looked on your website and have made some notes, along with a picture of what is on there currently. While I don’t think there is any gender discrimination in price per say, it appears that you haven’t listed your service price for what it could cost a female child under the age of 10. For not listing and then charging the women 40.00, it could appear that it’s gender discrimination. It’s because you charge 40.00 and the child was 8 years old, and she is female. Regardless of the time you took and saying it’s more work, and longer hair you had not listed a price on your website. It is illegal in the State of California to overcharge when you clearly had the price of 18.00 for a child under 10 years old. Had you listed your services including that your services is based on individuals needs, that it could be a higher price with long hair, then it wouldn’t be illegal. My legal advice, and I am trying to help you out here, is to refund some money to her. In the long run it could save on any legal fees, including court.

1 review 3 weeks ago We waited to get my 8 year old daughters hair cut for 45 minutes and although I was happy to wait we didn't find out until she got in the jump seat that KY was going to charge us 40$ when it clearly says 18$+ on the website. I have never heard of a child's haircut costing 40$ w/o a shampoo or anything fancy. She's a very sweet person but that doesn't give her the right to rob people. Outrageous price period! Like
Response from the owner 2 weeks ago Hi Jasmine, My apologies that you had to wait for such a long time and that you were dissatisfied with the price. My pricing is based on the individual person and what I do for them. If someone has long hair that takes more work, then the price will be higher. Regarding the wait, you are welcome to schedule a time in the future and regarding the price I can always give you the price before I do the cut so you can make a decision then if you wish to stay or go. I wish...
