Spencer's — Local services in Fairfield

I visited Spencer’s at Solano Mall with my wife and child, hoping for a fun, casual shopping experience. At first, I assumed the repeated staff engagement was just proactive customer service — but it quickly became clear that wasn’t the case. Despite clearly stating I would ask for help if needed, one employee asked me over four separate times if I needed anything, and all four staff members continuously followed me and my family throughout the store.

We were in the store for about 30 minutes, genuinely browsing and enjoying the novelty items, which are funny and unique. But being watched so closely the entire time made the experience deeply uncomfortable. It felt less like customer service and more like surveillance — as if we were being profiled. My family and I were dressed casually in pajamas, but that doesn’t warrant being treated like potential criminals.

This isn’t the first time I’ve experienced profiling, and as a minority, I know the difference between attentive service and targeted suspicion. The behavior of the staff crossed a line. Even though my son found a shirt he liked, and they gave us a discount (possibly after realizing how visibly upset I was), it didn’t change the fact that I left feeling harassed and deeply disappointed.

Retail environments should be inclusive and respectful — this was the opposite. Spencer’s needs to reevaluate how they treat their customers, especially families who simply want to shop in peace.

They should really make it handicap accessible. My husband is in a wheelchair and before his accident it has been our favorite shop but since his accident he is in a wheelchair and it was hard for him to go in and browse around which was a bummer considering I took him here for his Xmas gift of his choice. Makes me realize that they should consider making it handicap accessible for other people as well. Or make the areas wider to get through. Especially with the social...

The employee Liz was incredibly rude. First I couldn’t even find someone who worked there because she was covering her badge and hiding in the corner. Then once I interacted with her, she was completely unhelpful and gave me an attitude when I had just asked a simple question. She definitely needs to work on her...
