You must be bored! I know I am. 202 reviews before I posted this one, and not one person has anything negative to say about Shovlin Mattress Factory. How come I can't get any variety when it comes to reading reviews on a mattress company?!
So, I had to resist all temptations to go to a mainstream mattress store like Mattress Firm or perhaps consider a mattress in a box like Casper or Purple. I mean, that is what most people do, right? I felt like a traitor considering going to some mattress factory that most people never even heard of. It took a lot of convincing for my girlfriend even to consider making the trip. I told her, "Go read those 202 positive reviews, and then tell me we shouldn't check this place out." I won the argument quite easily.
We made the trip from central NJ off Parkway exit 135, through a lot of winding back roads where we found this little factory located in the middle of nowhere. We entered the showroom and were immediately greeted by James, the Vice President of Sales.
And, I'll admit, I'm not a big fan of mattress salesmen. I think they can be as bad as car dealers. However, my mind was in a good place that morning given the number of positive reviews Shovlin has received both here on Google and on the mattress message boards. With an established reputation, I felt I was in good hands with James.
From memory, the showroom has about a dozen different beds to try. They have three basic collections: Innerspring, Latex Hybrid and Nirvana. These mattresses accommodate a range of budgets. At first, I was a bit dubious that James took us directly to their most expensive line of mattresses, the Nirvana collection. Still, as he educated us on the advantages and disadvantages of Latex vs. the common innerspring mattresses, I realized that this was more than just a sales move to make an upsell.
Nobody likes buying mattresses. I put off replacing my 12+ year-old Saatva because I feared the expense of replacing it. I put up with two years of constant back pain and uncomfortable sleep to avoid spending money. But when the time came to do something about it, I didn't want to go cheap. James effectively sold us on latex over innerspring, citing they are more durable, hypoallergenic, and come with a better warranty which they back for 10 years.
The Nirvana beds are expensive, but as a side sleeper I liked the feel of the mattress and its advantages over a coil or hybrid. I ordered my bed with a promised free delivery within 1 week which I thought was quite reasonable.
I received a phone call a day before delivery with confirmation from the drivers. Upon delivery, the men took away my old mattress and box spring (for a nominal fee I paid in advance) and set up my new bed. They were in and out in under 10 minutes.
It has been a few days that I have been sleeping on my new Shovlin Nirvana latex mattress. I realize I'm coming off a mattress that was past its prime, but the first thing I notice is amount of solid support beneath my body. There was an immediate improvement in not waking up with back pain. The amount of tossing I had to do in order to get comfortable had completely ceased with this new mattress beneath me.
In saying all of this, I realize I may come off as being disingenuous. I am an actual customer who was just as skeptical as everyone else is when it comes to buying a mattress. There's no doubt that these positive reviews and word-of-mouth steered me in the right direction as to where to shop. I want to pay that experience back to any of you who may be just as skeptical as I was.
I want to thank James for doing an excellent job of educating and helping us buy a mattress without any sales pressure. Since I am certain he is reading this review, I wanted to let him know that my girlfriend is still interested in purchasing a Queen bed and should be returning there sometime after the...
Read moreWriting a review because I find so many other people in similar situations. I spent years going from one mattress to another due to indentations forming after 6-12mos. Sleepys, Tempur, Helix, even IKEA-- I tried all of the main brands and they failed miserably. The worst part is that these mattresses magically fail after the point of no return. You either have to eat the cost of the mattress, or you're stuck with store credit (looking at you IKEA).
After doing a nauseating amount of mattress research online, I found a random comment that said "if the company can't tell you what each of the layers are composed of, they're going to rip you off". Even worse, there are companies that make up fancy jargon such as "Cool Twist Gel Foam", just to pass off their sub-par materials (looking at you Mattress Firm).
Eventually I stumbled across Shovlin as they were mentioned with high praise in several mattress forums. I am within an hour of the store so I shot them an email with my boilerplate questions, and surprisingly they replied with straight to the point answers. They will tell you exactly what their mattresses are made of, invite you to come into their store to ask more questions, and give you the grand tour of their showroom. Its night-and-day between mainstream brands and Shovlin; there is no upsell, no recommended brands, and no part-time salesmen that are clueless as to what they are selling you.
I ended up purchasing through James as he was able to answer all of my obscure mattress questions (VIA email, phone, in-person). I will admit the price was higher than expected, but it really drives home how much quality materials should cost vs. all of the low-end materials that mainstream mattress stores sell to their customers.
And just to prove this isn't some in-house review, I attached my mattress receipt for verification. I will be back after a year to follow up on my own comment for those of you that are interested in how...
Read moreThis review is loooong overdue. About 4 years ago bought a $500 Serta because of a sudden move for a new job. It was perfect the first year and declined ever since. My boyfriend and I were on the hunt for a new mattress since end of 2020 — it was starting to really affect the quality of sleep we were getting.
We found Shovlin after hours of research and I’m so happy we did. We made an appointment to come to the showroom (this was early 2021 so more covid restrictions) and were greeted by Mike. He was super nice and asked us a few questions about how we liked to sleep, the problems with our current mattress, and our price range. He was very knowledgeable about all the different types of mattresses on the market today and obviously about the ones they sell at Shovlin. He even gave us a brief rundown of the industry at large to help give us more context but never with the air of “but ours is the best.” Although, unsurprisingly it turns out theirs is the best!
Mike showed us a few options and left us to try them out. There was no pressure to impulse buy, which we had experienced at a chain retail store where the salesperson knocked 40-45% off the sticker price if it meant we’d walk away with a purchase that day.
Once we had made our choice, a flippable innerspring, there was no upsell on the extra mattress pad that could go with our mattress model. He told us to give it a month and if we felt we needed it we could get it. There were no surprise fees for delivery - free if you live ANYWHERE in NJ! And only $15 to take away our old mattress, like that is unheard of!
Even if we hadn’t found a mattress for us, I would still send everyone I know to them. The shopping experience alone is worth the visit. Their mattresses are worth every penny and when I can I’m going back to get one from their...
