Greeley Hat Works — Local services in Garden City

The short of it: I can't provide a higher recommendation for conducting business with Greeley Hat Works and am incredibly grateful for the top-notch service and product I received.

For those who aren't convinced, I'd like to expand on my thoughts. Many who seek a custom hat often hear about Greeley Hat Works fairly early in the search, particularly for those who reside in Colorado or surrounding states. It isn't difficult to see why. With Greeley hats on the heads of the Yellowstone cast, former President George W. Bush, Governor Gordon of Wyoming, football star Aaron Rodgers, the band Aerosmith, and many more, it becomes clear that this shop is well-known and well-respected. Specifically, owner Trent Johnson is what makes this store what it is. Having worked not only in the industry but at this very store for over thirty years (and owning it since 1996!), he is synonymous with the Greeley Hat Works experience. I made an appointment on April 15th, and before I was even in the door I was greeted by name by Mr. Johnson himself. He spent a great deal of time working with me both on the famous conformateur as well as in recommending hat shapes and colors. My experience from the very first day was not just one with an incredible array of personalization; it was actually personal. I am not former President Bush nor a rancher with thousands of acres to my name. I am a kid, only a 22-year-old college student. My hat won't be on the news, it won't be put in a museum when I pass, and it will never be valued at auction. And yet I was treated with what I firmly believe was the same level of respect and care the rich and famous receive. All of that was just from day one. When I received the email in early May that my hat had been completed, I was shocked. How could that be so fast? Hat production times are usually in the range of several months. I was fully prepared for this, and yet Trent made the deliberate push to have my hat done the week prior to my graduation from CU. What an incredibly touching gesture it was that Trent not only remembered that I had a graduation coming up, but without any prompting ensured I would be able to wear my hat right from the moment I toss my graduation cap into the air. As a first-time customer with no true name for myself I was uniquely valued. Trent carried a great sense of humor through the hat-making process and showed great care for my desires as we designed my hat. When it came time to shape my hat I got to see the artist himself at work. Trent carried conversation with me without pauses, fielded other customers concerns, and ensured the smooth operation of his business with his staff all while expertly shaping the crown and brim by hand. Even as he tended to these things he ensured he took all the time I needed in order to get my hat just right. The whole experience felt incredibly personal and bespoke. Every hat is a work of art, individually crafted by a team of several dozen skilled hat-makers. It goes without saying that the product itself is incredible. I have never owned a hat that fits so perfectly upon my head, and the "Competitor" hare blend used for the construction of my personal hat is soft and warm. I went to Colorado from Maine to meet a friend and see my daughter. I went to Greeley Hat Works knowing I wanted a new hat and had decided to buy once and cry once. Cody was the person who waited on me and I couldn’t be happier. After using their sizing machine to get a scale shape of my head he then took down my name, hat size, email address and Social Security number for their records. I was a little hesitant to give him my email address but he seemed like an honest enough person so I figured I’d be okay. I had decided on a pure beaver and he walked me through all the different options and made the process simple. Because this is a pure beaver hat and a custom he made sure I understood that it would be upwards of a year before my order was ready. He was great to deal with and made the process very fun. ( he didn’t really record my Social number but he was very thorough). I can’t say enough good about my experience. While I was there others were coming in with hat that needed adjustments or maintenance of some sort and they really seemed to be going out of their way to make sure every customer was being helped. Good outfit! Highly recommend! *edit: I decided I wanted to be there when they did the Final Cut and shape of the hat, so I called and talked to someone who said they would make the note on my order and let me know via email when it was ready. Well, somewhere along the way that didn’t get fully communicated and they cut and shaped the hat and let me know it was ready for pickup. The shape wasn’t exactly what I wanted and the hat was too big. The fellow who waited on me this time took another mold of my head and discovered it was smaller than the original because of where they put the contraption on my skull. He did this twice and tried to steam it to shape. When that didn’t work, he said he’d send it back to the shop and have it rebuilt. While disappointed that it wasn’t perfect, they definitely stand behind their work and he expects it to be ready to ship this week. I still would recommend. Mistakes happen, but they were...

Love Greeley Hat Works! Trent did an amazing job on beautiful palm leaf hat I used to float the river this summer! It was absolutely perfect for what I needed and looked amazing, I received multiple compliments! Can’t wait to order my next hat from Greeley in August at The Maverick trunk show!

I received my latest masterpiece from Trent and the Greeley team. It’s as perfect as the three previous hats they have done for me! This is more of a review for Trent as a person.

He was in my hometown for a trunk show in March of 2023. I had some friends in town from the UK who have never experienced the western lifestyle much less the luxury western lifestyle. I reached out to see if we could get a brief appointment just so my friends could meet Trent and get a brief explanation of the hat making experience. We were able to get an appointment with him, my intention was to take no more than 15 minutes of his time when we got there as I knew my friends would most likely not be purchasing a hat from him. I told him as much when we first arrived for our appointment. His response was “but you have an appointment”.

He spent a full hour with my friends giving them the full Greeley experience. He was more than gracious and accommodating. He treated us as if we were all about to purchase his most expensive hats.

My friends had many other experiences that day including their first “Texas steak”, their first cattle drive, and their first rodeo. At the end of their trip, I asked them all what their favorite experience was. All of them said “the hat guy”.
