Rubiner's Cheesemongers — Local services in Great Barrington

The products are quite good. However, the staff and the owner of the establishment are extremely rude and dismissive. I cannot, in good conscious, give the 5 stars they deserve for product.

I visit Great Barrington and the area regularly and each time I have patronized this monger and I walk out stating I will never go back. On planning an up coming trip with a friend, who saw the monger and the four star review, I told her flat out, I will not be spending any money at Rubiner's. I will not pay money to be treated poorly.

The first time the behavior was poor I chalked it up to the staff and owner having a bad day. The second time I was appalled by the treatment and the town gossip being shared openly on the sales floor about other merchants, the third time, I knew what I wanted, went in, purchased the item and left. Even then, the staff managed to be dismissive.

It's a nice place to buy cheeses that are hard to find, as well as cured meats, coffee, preserves, beers and wines, and some other fancier items. There's a little place to eat that is right behind it that has good coffee and espresso as well as sandwiches and other breakfast and lunch items. If you don't like to use sugar or other natural sweeteners, you'll need to bring your own because they don't have Splenda or Stevia, etc. I always find the human interactions somewhat odd, as I often do in these more upscale casual places. Would not recommend getting the ploughman's lunch because they have to have the cheese cut from the shop, and you're at the mercy of how busy it might be in there. I have been to Rubiners many times and always had a good experience. I was excited to bring Out of town (foodie) guests to the store To show them the large and interesting selection of cheese. Unfortunately, it was a fairly unpleasant experience. Matt Rubiner, The owner of the store, waited on us and from the Moment we walked in, he was rude and condescending for absolutely no reason. It seems to me if you own a store you would want customers to feel welcome and taking care of. My friend ended up spending a good deal of money in the store but I would not return.
