Absolem's House of Voodoo — Local services in Houston

The following has no mention or opinion on products from Absolem's, as I have made no purchase at the store. I cannot say anything in either direction for their products quality, prices, or availability. This review is purely in regards to personal experiences with the store, its owners, employees, and several apprentices who have been with the store across multiple years.

I visited Absolem's for the first time after it was hyped up to me (by someone I know who was with the shop) for over a year. I had a death in the family and needed something to keep my mind off of the day's events. I met Doc and we talked for a while. We talked about the store, what it does, what they teach, and some store issues that happened to fall under my area of professional expertise. I mentioned that it was within my line of work and that I might have a reliable connection that could do the work for them. It was very quickly brought up that since I knew someone at the store, I could and should do the work for them myself as a favor. I tried to move the conversation away from that and towards other topics, but the suggestion of me doing free work came up several more times before I left without making a purchase, as I was very uncomfortable with being pressed to do favors for someone that I did not know on a...

This place is amazing! It is everything that it purports itself to be and more. The people that work here are also top notch. A few of them have been here for a while, and they are fantastic, but there are a couple relatively new additions to the staff that really make the place shine, with their customer service skills, knowledge and demeanor. In particular, there is one rather new fellow, whose name I am at a loss to recall right this moment... His breadth of knowledge is astounding, but he is never condescending or dismissive to anyone, and is always open to listen and learn new things. In addition to the information he possesses, his countenance is a shining, radiant, beam of light that shines directly into everyone's core that comes into contact with him, instilling them with feelings of peace, hope, and contentment, and impartig a little more understanding into their lives than they came with. He is a rather slender, dark complected, chap with short, very dark, hair and several tattoos, most notably, on his neck. I assure you, that if you visit while he is working on the first floor, you will not be disappointed. Everyone else is great here too! This place is simply a must, as long as you aren't a close minded, member of the "Society to bring back the Inquisition", or...

This is officially my forever pagan/witch/etc shop. Amazing vibe, amazing product selection, especially for someone like me, whose spiritual practice is NOT the typical European/Western paganism but is rather rooted way more in Latin American witchery and iconography, thanks to my Abuelita- rest her soul- and my Other Mama, Honduran and Colombian respectively. Folks who follow other traditions that are not typical of eurocentric paganism will also be elated by the selection here.

The owner is an amazing individual with rich traditional knowledge and and the ability to guide customers and visitors toward exactly what they need, even if it isn't what they THINK they need. Absolem was able to bring me out of my shell at a wonderful tea tasting event the first time I went to the shop, with only a very brief conversation and taking my hand, at a very stressful time in my life that had put up a wall between me and my ability to engage with strangers and relax in a new environment.
