The people at the Houston School of Carpentry really care about the people they enroll. They helped me so much getting my Post 9/11 fund to approve of the school, and the entire registration process was painless. I took the HVAC course and was surprised that the class was so short. Considering the school was free for me I decided to attend anyways because (if anything) it would give me an idea of how to do some HVAC.
Boy did I judge the book by it's cover too soon. The class I attended was FULL of information, the instructors were very knowledgeable with countless years of experience. We were also extremely hands on with nearly everything we covered from ladder safety, brazing techniques, pump down procedures, electrical wiring, and way more than I can list here. By the end of the 5th week we put together our own condensing unit and evaporator unit, piecing it together from broken bits and scrap parts, a feat I never thought I would be able to accomplish when I first started the class. Now we're tackling our second unit and it all makes so much more sense than it did before.
Some people might complain that the class is not structured very well or that they just sat around and talked a lot, but this school really gives what you take from it. If you come in, sleep, or goof off a lot than you have no one to blame for a poor education but yourself. The instructors definitely are not in the daycare business and most certainly won't coddle or handhold anyone if you are not interested in the class. However, if you charge in and get your hands dirty, the instructors will be there, by your side, every step of the way, and ensure that you are learning everything that you can. Mistakes will be made (and that's ok!) but no matter how helpless a situation gets the instructors are ready with knowledge and a helping hand. I walked into the class with trepidation and am now graduating with a lot of confidence that whatever company I land will be surprised that a rookie would know so much from the get go. I'm under no illusion that I still have a lot to learn, but this school really sparked that motivation to be the best tech out there that I possibly can be.
I can't wait to start my new path in life and I highly recommend this school to anyone who wants more knowledge and who wants to take on a trade skill, be it in HVAC/R or as an electrician. What's it going to hurt to make a phone call or stop in for a visit. It might not lead to anything, or it might be the second chance you've been...

Read moreThis school has it solicitors constantly calling to try to get their students employed I have told them countless times to stop calling me to put me on a do not call list they say they will every single time in a tent yet apparently they don't have a list I even gave them fair warning that I would be writing this they have called me five times since then. I am not interested in students that come from their program because they have not been taught anything their program is not even long enough to teach them anything they just teach them how to pass the EPA exam but they have no knowledge or skills they tell the students that they'll be making $25 plus an hour upon graduation sorry ain't going to happen anywhere even if this was a good school no one's gonna come right out of school making that kind of money. But out of this school they are no better than an opera that hasn't even been through there in the first place and that is all they will get a job as not a technician. I should have wrote this along time ago they have been harassing me the last...
