Didnāt see a stand alone section for me to review Oyatsu so Iāll just review both Daido and the pop up cafe!
Daido Market
Overall- 8/10 āļø Iāve been coming here for years! They have always had a great selection of items! Nice variety, has items that other Japanese/asian markets donāt have so thatās nice! Staff is very kind, super helpful in answering questions and providing recommendations. Only downside is the store is a bit small so when the pop up is operating, itās a bit of a pain to shop and look through the aisles.
Service 10/10 Like I mentioned the staff is super kind! Zero complaints from me!
Premade meals - 8/10 š± I canāt say Iāve had all of their premade options, but what Iāve had so far has been very enjoyable! Also much cheaper than going to a Japanese restaurant when youāre in a pinch and have specific cravings. Love their sushi options and their tempura bowls. Also if you want to jazzz things up, grab some furikake to enhance the rice!
Ok gonna move onto Oyatsu
We tried only two drinks from there so will only be reviewing those items!
We went to the inside pop up called Oyatsu, a very small Japanese dessert shop pop up. It looks like it has gotten extremely popular lately and honestly very well deserved!
Matcha Latte - 9/10 šµ Their matcha is delicious! The drink overall is so creamy, refreshing and thank goodness not drenched in sweeteners. I donāt like overly sweet matcha thatās my personal preference but this was such a nice balanced drink. My only wish is that they had oat milk instead of only soy milk as an option. Again just a preference for me! The soy milk option was still delicious paired with their matcha š
Strawberry Milk- 10/10 š I liked this one more than the matcha! I love the smell and taste to strawberries and cream items. And this strawberry milk to me tasted so amazing. It was creamy, sweet but not overpowering, smooth and loved the strawberry puree. It was also very refreshing! I would totally go for this if you happen to it be a matcha fan. It makes me wonder how their strawberry matcha would taste together! Iāll have to go back and see!
Service 10/10 āļø The baristas were super kind and they also made sure to get your order right. They have a a good system and you can clearly see the matcha drinks are not premade so please be patient and expect a slight wait to your drink. I promise they are taking their time to ensure the drinks are as perfect as...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDaido is one of my favorite hidden gems for high-quality sashimi at a price thatās surprisingly affordable. Every time Iāve come here, the sashimi has been incredibly fresh, clean, and flavorfulāhonestly better than some sit-down sushi restaurants Iāve been to. If youāre a sashimi lover and want something convenient and budget-friendly without sacrificing quality, this place is it.
So far, Iāve only tried their sashimi and dried cuttlefish, but both have impressed me. The sashimi is consistently fresh, and the cuttlefish makes for a great savory snack. Iāve seen they carry a wide range of Japanese food items, from seaweed and snacks to pantry staples and frozen goodsāso I definitely plan to branch out and try more.
The store itself has a clean, well-organized layout, and thereās something exciting about browsing through all the unique products you donāt typically find in standard grocery stores. Itās a great spot for both everyday essentials and specialty finds.
If you're into Japanese food or just want excellent sashimi without breaking the bank, I highly recommend checking out Daido. It's become one of my go-to spots, and Iām looking forward to exploring more of...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreSmall, quaint, and tucked away this place is reminiscent of Japanese culture or at least in terms of convenient stores. Nippan Daido has what you're looking for if you're looking for Japanese-specific produce and groceries.
This Japanese grocery store is quite unique in that there isn't many like it in Houston; in fact, it may be the only one in Houston (to my knowledge). They have a wide assortment of Asian groceries, all mostly Japanese, such as Katsuobushi, dashi, konbu, okonomiyaki sauce, kewpie mayo, snacks, green tea kit-kat, soba noodles, sun brand noodles, and more. The items are varied and well stocked given the limited brands to choose from, and they even have slices of fish/sashimi on sale portioned for single persons (just like in Japan!). This store will probably have it if you're looking for a Japanese-specific brand but many of the items can usually be found at other international grocery stores. Overall, this place is worth a visit if you haven't checked it out before, and they carry Sun Noodles which are pretty much the epitome of ramen noodles in the west. Prices vary but in my opinion are a bit more pricey than other...
