La Fruteria — Local services in Hyde Park Township

Been coming here for years, nice friendly staff, and it's one of the only markets with a great variety of traditional Caribbean foods....however I wish their African yams, the Ghana yams, could be more fresh. Many are rotten. Although they've made it a practice to cut them when you get to the front cashier to verify it's not rotten, many times it IS and then you have to run to the back to get another one or just say forget it and go without. If u or them forget and they don't cut it at the front, u may get home and find out all your yams are rotten. This has been going on for years. They need a new yams supplier. An African lady has a small market around my house and her African yams are always pretty fresh, so I know La Fruteria can find fresher African yams if they wanted to. Coming from downtown, I needed OnStar to keep up with the streets that abruptly cut off. I imagine it's not hard if you are from that area. The street Exchange/Commercial becomes one. Exotic items are available such as dragon fruit and garden eggs. I would suggest calling before driving over. Soursop sells quick. They carry jakfruit in slices which is cool if you have a hard time cutting them. The spices are abundant. Im telling you man this is a gem! The meat counter had quite a bit of goat and beef parts if that is your thing. Don't go looking for pot roast or ground beef. That is not that store! I live in the south suburbs and I come here for authentic Jamaican and African seasoning and staples that you rarely can find in your typical grocery....the veggies are always fresh and plentiful...the butcher chops the goat meat to your specifications...chicken & fish too...ive purchased Red Snapper here can't complain they have a good variety of fish..salt fish canned Ackee...its all here...African Foo Foo flour & pounded yam root..u cut to your specifications...as you can see I love this place....the people who run it are pleasant and helpful last I was there they had security...
