Heritage Cycles — Local services in Jackson Township

I recently had one of the best customer service experiences of my life at Heritage Cycles. I have a limb difference that makes my right hand/wrist smaller and my right arm shorter. I’ve had my bike since I was a teen, but started riding again recently and was experiencing a lot of wrist pain due to the position I had to be in to reach the handlebars with my right hand. I sent an email to Heritage Cycles asking if there were either any modifications that could be made to my bike or any other bikes they would recommend. They encouraged me to bring my bike in, so I did. When I arrived, Josh assisted me. He spent a good amount of time with me looking over my bike, listening intently to the problems I was experiencing and asking questions to gauge what my limitations were. He even pointed out a safety issue that I hadn’t considered; because I wasn’t able to reach the brake with my right hand, I was only braking the front tire and was at risk of flipping over the bike if I made a hard stop. I know next to nothing about bikes, so it would have been very easy for someone to just say I needed a new one and make a little extra money, but Josh went above and beyond to make MY bike work for me. In the end, Heritage replaced my handlebars with ones that were easier to reach, rewired the brakes so that my left hand brakes the back tire, brought the brake handles closer to the bars so I can reach them with both hands, and did a tune up. Around 5 years ago I appreciated the Heritage staff’s assistance selecting a Surly. In the thousands of miles cycling on it since then the follow up enhancements and maintenance at Heritage has been great. This shop really stood out recently when I discovered damage just days before I was leaving for a gravel trail tour. Josh quickly contacted Surly for a replacement fork and had a good backup plan if it didn’t arrive in time. The fork arrived and he prioritized replacing it quickly enough that I could do a long test ride day before leaving for the Katy Trail in Missouri. Brought a store bought bike in for repair. Several spokes had broken on my rear wheel. Once work began on the bike they determined there was further damage to the rear wheel than first thought. A new wheel was ordered. I also opted for a tune up for the bike during the repair. Took a little longer than expected to complete due to waiting for the new wheel to arrive. Once I got the bike back I could not have been more pleased. The bike rides better than it did when I first bought it. Throughout the entire process communications were great and I was always aware what was going on and what the cost would be. I'll be brining my bike back yearly...
