Got to stop by the nation’s oldest black-owned bookstore located in the historic Farish Street District in Jackson, Mississippi during our family vacay! It is believed to be the nation’s oldest operating bookstore owned by a Black person. I attempted to do some research and learned that they were established in 1938 a few years before Marcus Books in Oakland, CA. Sadly, it was closed but I got to check out what I could from the window! This was my first time visiting Marshall’s Bookstore and it felt like I stumbled upon a hidden gem, even though it’s been around for years! This store is the cutest little book boutique, full of charm and good energy. I had such a wonderful time chatting with the owner and her son Justin! We talked about books, the community and even a little politics. The entire vibe was warm and welcoming. I love spaces that feel rooted in purpose and people, and this one definitely does. All that was missing was a place to sit, drink coffee or tea while reading one of the many authors on display! Can’t wait to come back for my next set of books. PSA They do ask you to wear a mask due to the number of elderly visitors they get throughout the day. If you don’t have one, they have them available for 25¢.
