Mississippi State Capitol — Local services in Jackson

Southern hospitality is a real thing because I discovered as much in the Mississippi State Capitol in Jackson. As soon as my small group walked through the front door, we were greeted by the Capitol’s tour director. She asked us to sign the guest book and affected to take us on tour but we didn’t have a lot of time so we opted for a self-tour and so she made a few key recommendations on our visit. The photos show where we wondered around. On higher floors, we were greeted by the person whose job it is to lead tours into the State Senate and House. Our questions were answered by our upstairs tour guide. Although no state Capitol can rival the historic nature of the U.S. Capitol, the Mississippi Capitol building is a fine example of the classic look of architecture from Rome and Greece. As a resident of MS and tour guide at State Capitol, I am very proud of how it represents us. It was designed by Theodore Link in 1901.

The photos were taken during the Book Festival so definitely a much larger crowd than normal.

What I like most is the fact that it has 10 different types of marble; foreign and domestic. There are also 4,750 original light fixtures. It’s built on Beaux-Art Style which was popular from 1890-1920.

Visitors who are touring all state capitols have stated that MS has one of the nicest.

This was a neat little experience. There are old and new pieces of farm equipment spread throughout the grounds. There is a short walking trail through a wooded area that has different trees and plants marked. There is also a small, mock-up, old time town that has a church, two room school house, general store, gas station, cotton gin, saw mill, print shop, several small log cabins along with a few other structures.
