RVP~1875 Furniture / Museum is an awesome place and we'll worth the trip from DSM. Everything is authentic to the 19th century time period from the wide tool collection used, design, methods used, labor and historically accurate furniture. Robby stopped his production when we walked in the door to thoroughly explain furniture pieces, tools used, and how and why certain pieces were used. His passion shines through as he walks visitors through the aspects of 19th century furniture and the process of making them. Sarah was working on a cabinet and stopped to show us furniture pieces throughout the building and explained the various natural methods of staining. If these furnishings would complement your home, you need to talk with Robbie. Otherwise, the tour alone is very educational. He also offers classes and covered apprenticeships. While in Jefferson, don't miss the Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower, hand painted murals throughout town, and for a special treat lunch at The...
Read moreIf you've ever been left wanting more from a museum visit, you MUST go to RVP 1875 where history literally is alive. Robby Pedersen is not only a gifted presenter of the history of everyday people and things, he is also an original experimental historian who has rediscovered a lost tradecraft. He has dedicated his life to discovering how one trade was practiced, at one time, in one place. This is deep history. He has spent years doing hands-on research learning how furniture makers of the past practiced their trade, and years more honing his skills to demonstrate what it looks like to be a practical furniture maker serving real customers. I really cannot think of another person I've seen so completely immersed in history. He lives it.
On top of his vast knowledge, Robby also has a rare gift for presenting his topic in an engaging way. He has a generosity of spirit that makes you feel right at home in the serene and beautiful setting of his period workshop...
